USAF Thunderbirds Take Off at Oshkosh

Oshkosh will be here before we know it! Soon, the skies of Wisconsin will be filled with planes and the grounds will be filled with, well, more planes! People too! A lots of them! Check out some of the expected items at this year’s show.

The 2014 airshow marked the first time a US military jet demonstration team performed at Oshkosh. Performing Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the USAF Thunderbirds soared through the skies of Oshkosh in their famous red, white and blue F-16 Fighting Falcons. While this was a popular performance, it also forced the normal Oshkosh crowd line back a bit.

Matt Younkin was kind enough to take our cameras for a ride during his daytime Twin Beech Aerobatic demonstration at the 2014 show. We have two videos from that flight- one in the cockpit and one looking out over the wing. Check out both views below!

AirshowStuff also obtained a unique view of Kyle Franklin’s “Dracula” performance when we put a camera in the cockpit of Kyle’s plane.

One of the best things about Oshkosh is the variety of warbirds that perform each and every afternoon in the airshow. The 2014 show featured jets, radials, and much more!

The weather of Oshkosh can also provide a bit of a tricky landing situation for pilots. Check out several of our “Gusty Crosswind Landings” videos by watching the playlist below.

If you want even more Oshkosh, you can settle in for an hour and a half of action with our mega-compilation!

Here’s a few more of our photos from the 2014 show. You can find many more photos in our gallery!

P-51 Mustang Star Trails

The 2017 EAA AirVenture Oshkosh Airshow and Convention will be here soon! As we approach the annual aviation celebration, AirshowStuff presents some of our highlights from previous AirVentures. First up, the 2013 airshow:

Our camera went airborne with Jerry “Jive” Kerby and his RV-8 known as “Wild Blue!” Watch as Jive loops and rolls in the skies over Oshkosh in our rear-facing camera video.

One of the best parts of Oshkosh is the variety of airplanes you can see. At the south end of the field is where you’ll find the ultralight and helicopter area. We sent a camera up in an Aerolight 103 Ultralight for a unique view of the Oshkosh grounds.

Oshkosh is well known for having unique airplanes and the 2013 airshow sure did! AirshowStuff sat down with Justin Lewis, pilot of the FLS Microjet, the world’s smallest jet. Watch to see this amazing aircraft in action, and hear about how it came to be and why it is so special!

We also had the opportunity to spend a few minutes with Matt Younkin, and learned about his family’s flying history and what he enjoys about flying the Twin Beech.

Here are a few more of our favorite videos from Oshkosh 2013!

Bombers Over Oshkosh! EAA AirVenture 2017 To Feature Triple Bomber Formation And Other Flybys

B-52 Stratofortress Bomber

The Experimental Aircraft Association’s (EAA) annual AirVenture fly-in and airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin is always a huge gathering of vintage and modern aviation. This year is no exception, especially now with the news that the United States Air Force is planning on a composite flyover consisting of the B-1 Lancer, B-2 Spirit, and B-52 Stratofortress in one formation on Saturday, July 29!

B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber - Spirit of St Louis Airshow 2016B-1B Lancer Bomber

According to the article, the Saturday parade of modern bombers will be followed by both B-29 Superfortresses “Fifi” and “Doc,” two B-17 Flying Fortresses, several B-25 Mitchells, the A-20 Havoc, and “more yet to be announced.” We couldn’t agree more with the statement “If 2017 is the year of the bomber, then Saturday is bomber day.”

The bomber bash will kick off with a flyover of the B-1 on Monday, July 24. The Lancer flies again on Wednesday, July 26, following the Doolittle Raid reenactment. The reenactment will feature more than a dozen B-25s in the air. A B-52 will also be on static display throughout the week.

Additionally, both B-29s will fly together on Friday to commemorate the aircraft type’s 75th anniversary. Notably, AirVenture will be the first time the only two flying Superfortresses have shared the skies together.

We hope that many of you bomber fans out there can find your way to the show July 24-30th. We hope to see you there! For more information about what’s coming to AirVenture 2017, visit the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017 thread on our forums.

WATCH: Classic Warbird Sunset Flight – Ride Along With Six TBM Avengers!

Turkeys CAN Fly!

We here at AirshowStuff.com think you’ll agree that few things sound better than the radial engine of a classic warbird. Unless, of course, it’s SIX radial engines! In 2016, the Illinois Regional Valley airport in Peru, IL hosted their first TBM Avenger Gathering where ten TBM Avengers (along with many other classic warbirds) met for an unforgettable weekend showcasing this legend of World War II. Affectionately nicknamed “The Turkey” for its large size, the Avenger was designed as a torpedo bomber and saw action in the Pacific theater. Avengers were even piloted by such famous people as former President George H. W. Bush and movie star Paul Newman!

From taxi to landing, you get a cockpit view from one of the immaculately-restored Avengers taking part in a formation flight at dusk. The golden glow of the sunset, along with the six other Avengers, makes for some spectacular scenery. You’ll see various formations being flown, and even get a glimpse of a T-6 Texan photo ship capturing the action as well. The sound of the radial engine’s throaty roar takes you back to when these large aircraft patrolled the skies, looking for Japanese ships. So sit back, relax, and enjoy this thrilling video and all it has to offer, you won’t be disappointed!

WATCH: The Mighty B-52 Stratofortress Takes Off Right Over Your Head

The BUFF Is The Stuff!

It’s hard to beat the sight of a B-52 coming at you. One of the most iconic symbols of American air power, the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress has been flying since the 1950’s, and is scheduled to remain in service for at least another 15 years. The crew at AirshowStuff.com love the mighty BUFF (Big Ugly Fat….Fellow), and here’s your chance to see this awesome piece of history up close in a unique end-of-runway view. In 2015, the B-52 made it’s first-ever appearance at the famed EAA AirVenture airshow in Oshkosh, WI.

Watch as the Stratofortress spools up its eight Pratt and Whitney TF-33 engines and rolls down the runway right at you! You get a head-on view as the B-52 lifts off and screams overhead. You’ll see this legend of the cold war’s unique landing gear retraction sequence, followed by an overhead pass with the scream of the engines so loud, you’ll almost feel the ground shaking below you! As the BUFF comes around for a final pass, you’ll see the smoke from the engines, the twinkle of the landing lights, and the sheer size of this massive warrior as it approaches. You’ll even get a “goodbye” wave from the crew as it passes down the runway toward you before departing. So set your video player to full screen, turn up the speakers, and enjoy every second of this awesome video in full HD, because you have one of the best seats in the house!

WATCH: Patrouille de France Performs In The US For The First Time In Decades

The Patrouille de France performed the first airshow routine of their North American tour this past weekend, and we were there to capture it! Check out this video of their entire show on the Friday practice day at the Melbourne Air and Space Show in Florida. Melbourne is one of just a handful of stops the team will make on their whirlwind tour through the US and Canada this month, and marks the first US performance by the team in more than 30 years.

The routine is a little shorter than those of the US Navy Blue Angels and US Air Force Thunderbirds, but contains all of the same exciting elements – formation aerobatics, opposing flybys, and nonstop action. Because the Patrouille perform with eight jets instead of six, they can put together some larger formations and utilize multiple groups of aircraft in a similar fashion to the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, who perform with nine CT-114 Tutors. The French team also makes use of red- and blue-colored smoke, which might not sound like much but adds to the performance significantly and is a rare sight here in the US.

As a special treat, the team’s Airbus A400M Atlas support aircraft also took to the skies for a few flybys. It is accompanying the team all throughout their tour to transport their crew and equipment, and can also serve as a photo platform during their planned flyovers of US landmarks, such as the Statue of Liberty and New York City. This marked the first ever airshow performance by an A400M in the US and although it is far from the maximum performance company demonstration, it was an exciting addition to the lineup! You can check it out in the video below.

Rolling In The Sky!

The 2017 Airshow season kicked off this weekend with an airshow at the TICO Warbird Airshow in Florida and at NAF El Centro featuring the US Navy Blue Angels, and the staff at AirshowStuff.com couldn’t be more excited. That got us thinking about seeing the Blues in person again this year and had us looking back at last year’s performances in anticipation of what’s to come. 2017 promises to be a great year for airshow enthusiasts with all of the great performers we’ve come to know and love, including the Blue Angels!

Watch in this video as the Blues take to the skies for their famous High Show performance from the Spirit of St. Louis Airshow last year. You’ll get to see the entire routine, including crowd favorites like the Double Farvel, Echelon Parade, Opposing Knife Edge, and the always-anticipated Sneak Pass! The Blues never disappoint with their high energy show, and you’ll have a front seat to it all in this video, and all in HD!

The Blue Angels have been wowing airshow enthusiasts since they were formed in 1946, making them the second oldest aerobatic team in the world. Flying such legendary aircraft as the F6F Hellcat, F-4 Phantom, A-4 Skyhawk, and their current F/A-18 Hornets, the team dazzles millions of people each year, showcasing the precision and professionalism of the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps.
