Blue Angels Return To El Centro For 2018 Winter Training Period

Blue Angels Return for Winter Training

The Blue Angels have returned to their winter home at Naval Air Facility El Centro in California!

The team flew into the base, located about 87 miles east of San Diego, on January 3rd. They’ll remain at El Centro throughout January, February, and early March, flying several flights a day to perfect the demonstration.

The 10 week, 120 flight period will begin over the desert adjacent to El Centro; once the team feels confident in the demonstration they will begin to fly over the airfield.

This year marks the 51st year the team will use El Centro as their winter training base. The usually calm and warm weather of the Imperial Valley makes southern CA the perfect place for the Blue Angel’s winter training.

The 2018 season will be the Blue Angels’ 72nd show season. We have a copy of their 2018 airshow season schedule here on the blog – see if they’ll be performing near you!

One important member of the team will not be joining the rest of the aircraft though; Fat Albert, the team’s C-130 Hercules transport, has been grounded during an investigation into the crash of a Marine Corps C-130 last summer. A post on Instagram shows her in the maintenance hangar for an inspection. Bert’s Marine pilots typically practice their routine during their own winter training period at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma in Arizona.

Rolling In The Sky!

The 2017 Airshow season kicked off this weekend with an airshow at the TICO Warbird Airshow in Florida and at NAF El Centro featuring the US Navy Blue Angels, and the staff at AirshowStuff.com couldn’t be more excited. That got us thinking about seeing the Blues in person again this year and had us looking back at last year’s performances in anticipation of what’s to come. 2017 promises to be a great year for airshow enthusiasts with all of the great performers we’ve come to know and love, including the Blue Angels!

Watch in this video as the Blues take to the skies for their famous High Show performance from the Spirit of St. Louis Airshow last year. You’ll get to see the entire routine, including crowd favorites like the Double Farvel, Echelon Parade, Opposing Knife Edge, and the always-anticipated Sneak Pass! The Blues never disappoint with their high energy show, and you’ll have a front seat to it all in this video, and all in HD!

The Blue Angels have been wowing airshow enthusiasts since they were formed in 1946, making them the second oldest aerobatic team in the world. Flying such legendary aircraft as the F6F Hellcat, F-4 Phantom, A-4 Skyhawk, and their current F/A-18 Hornets, the team dazzles millions of people each year, showcasing the precision and professionalism of the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps.

Fat Albert To Miss Start Of Blue Angels’ 2017 Airshow Season

C-130 Fat Albert Maintenance Overhaul

Last August, we reported that Fat Albert, the famous C-130 Hercules flown by the US Navy Blue Angels, was undergoing a massive maintenance overhaul at Hill AFB in Utah. The rework caused the beloved aircraft to miss the remainder of the 2016 season, and the Marine Corps crew borrowed a standard KC-130 to transport the team’s equipment. They could not perform in the backup, known always as “Ernie”, due to differences in the airframe.

Now, it looks like Bert will still be undergoing maintenance as the 2017 airshow season starts.

In a tweet to a fan on the Fat Albert Twitter Account, “Bert” announced she’ll miss the first show of the season at NAF El Centro in California. Other photos posted to Twitter show the propellers detached from the aircraft and the iconic gold paint on the nose of Fat Albert.

At this time, no return date for Fat Albert has been released but we have heard that the team expects to get the aircraft back in March. Once Bert is back in service, it will take the crew 5 or 6 weeks to train up to demo standards, so the first performance may not be until late April or early May. Get well soon, Bert!
