Take a look at this beautiful jet! The Royal Canadian Air Force took the wraps off of the special paint scheme developed for the 2018 CF-18 Hornet Demonstration Team this past week. Although illustrations of the design were shared in January, the finished aircraft was debuted publicly in a ceremony at CFB Cold Lake on Tuesday.
Each year, the RCAF designates one CF-18 Hornet as the primary demonstration aircraft, and paints it up in a special scheme. The designs have ranged from vertical fin designs to brightly colored, full-aircraft designs. The 2018 scheme celebrates 60 years of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD. You can read more about the design and some of the special elements it incorporates in our previous post.
Demonstration pilot Captain Stefan “Porcelain” Porteous will be performing in the jet all over Canada and the United States in 2018. Check out the 2018 CF-18 Hornet Demonstration schedule to see if he will be appearing near you!
Hats off to the paint crew for a superb job, and thank you to Steve Bigg of Locked On Photography for allowing us to share his photos!
The Royal Canadian Air Force has just released an illustration of the coming 2018 CF-18 Hornet demonstration team paint scheme! This amazing, full-aircraft design is intended to celebrate 60 years of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD. The specially painted aircraft will be the team’s primary demonstration aircraft throughout the season. Make sure to check the 2018 CF-18 Hornet demonstration schedule and see if the jet will be appearing near you, and stay tuned for photos of the jet as it is rolled out!
The RCAF explained some of the elements of the paint scheme in their announcement:
This year’s design commemorates the 60 years of the North American Aerospace Defense Command.
The design: Elements from NORAD’s logo – lightning bolts, a north-pointing sword, the globe, and silver stylized wings that evoke both the northern lights and radar sweeps. Taken together, the motif is undeniably symbolic of NORAD’s ongoing commitment to the protection and defence of North American airspace, and the RCAF’s role in guaranteeing Canadian sovereignty.
The #CF18Demo team is looking forward to showcasing 60 years of Canada and the United States sharing “the watch” through NORAD.
This year’s aircraft is just the latest in a long line of specially-painted demonstration team aircraft. The 2017 Hornet celebrated “Canada 150”, the 150th anniversary of Canada’s confederation, with a beautiful red and white design.

Big news for those attending the Memphis Airshow this weekend. The show has added performances by the CF-18 Hornet Demo Team and the Canadian Forces Snowbirds Air Demonstration Squadron!
— Memphis Airshow (@MemphisAirshow) May 9, 2017
The addition of the two teams comes after show organizers were forced to cancel the Montreal 375 celebration, which was to feature the Snowbirds. Flooding in Canada has caused numerous issues and resulted in the deployment of Canadian Forces and first responders.
The Snowbirds and CF-18 join an already stellar lineup which includes the Blue Angels, USAF F-16 Viper Demo, Shockwave Jet Truck, Leap Frogs, Scooter Yoak in his P-51, Jim Tobul in his F-4U Corsair, Skip Stewart, Mike Wiskus, Michael Goulian, the Stearman Formation Team and a B-17.

The special paint scheme for the 2017 CF-18 Hornet demonstration aircraft has been unveiled! The scheme was presented today at the ICAS convention in Las Vegas. The stunning design celebrates the Canada’s 150th anniversary with the national colors, red and white, and several versions of the famed maple leaf symbol. The unveiling follows the announcement of the 2017 CF-18 airshow schedule yesterday.
Each year, the dedicated demonstration aircraft gets a special paint scheme for the airshow season. The 2016 aircraft was painted black and yellow in honor of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, and in 2015 the aircraft was painted in camouflage to commemorate the Battle of Britain in World War II.

Big news came from the Abbotsford International Airshow August 5, 2016 with the announcement that a Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II will be on public display at the show, which takes place on August 12th through the 14th in Abbotsford, British Columbia. The F-35 on display will be one from the 34th Fighter Squadron, 388th Fighter Wing out of Hill AFB, Utah. Alongside the Lightning II throughout the weekend will be Lockheed Martin Senior Test Pilot Billie Flynn, a former Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 Hornet pilot, to talk about the aircraft and its capabilities. This will be the first F-35 appearance in Canada.
While the F-35 is still a prospective replacement for the aging CF-18 Hornet fleet in Royal Canadian Air Force service, political support for the jet is falling. Lockheed Martin’s competitor Boeing is going to be showing off their F/A-18F Super Hornet at this year’s show as well with a company demonstration in addition to the already scheduled US Navy Super Hornet demontration. The corporate demo differs from the Navy’s routine in that the aircraft will perform to the edge of its limits while carrying a payload. The F-35 is sure to be the highlight of the ground portion while the F/A-18F will be the star of the aerial portion.
The Breitling Jet Team will be returning to perform at this year’s show along with the annual appearances by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds and CF-18 Hornet demo teams as well as the CFB Comox CH-149 Cormorant Search and Rescue demo. The show will also be welcoming the Jack Link’s Screamin’ Sasquatch Jet Waco biplane and Gary Rower in his Stearman biplane to their first appearances at Abbotsford.
The aircraft, two in total, will arrive at the Abbotsford International Airport on Thursday Aug 11. For more information on the upcoming Abbotsford International Airshow, please visit www.abbotsfordairshow.com.
It didn’t take long for another airshow to snag the Canadian Forces Snowbirds and CF-18 demonstration team following the recent cancellation of the Eastern Townships Airshow in Bromont, Quebec. The Atlantic Canada International Airshow (ACIAS) website now includes an announcement that they have decided to shift one weekend to take the Bromont dates, and in the process secure both highly coveted performances. There are no details yet on how other scheduled performances may be impacted by the date change.
ACIAS is a traveling airshow that shifts between different host cities from year to year. This helps make the airshow tenable in the smaller towns on Canada’s Eastern Coast. ACIAS is being held at Miramichi Airport in Miramichi, New Brunswick in 2016. Miramichi previously hosted the show in 2013.
