WATCH: Two B-29 Superfortresses Flying Together For The First Time In Decades!

Double Trouble!

What’s better than a flyover from a B-29 Superfortress? The obvious answer is flyovers from TWO B-29 Superfortresses! AirVenture 2017 was an exciting week for many reasons, but this just may be the best reason of all. For the first time since 1960, there were two airworthy B-29 Superfortresses sharing the skies, and the AirshowStuff.com crew was there to capture this historic moment.

Although “Fifi” has ruled the airshow circuit as the only flyable B-29 for years, “Doc” became airworthy in 2016 and completed test flights in 2017. Attention immediately turned to the first time these aircraft would meet each other, and there was little doubt it’d be in Oshkosh. The two ultra-rare warbirds flew together several times during the week, ultimately flying in close formation together along with numerous other historical and modern bombers for an absolutely astonishing joint flyby!

The newly restored B-29 Superfortress named “Doc” will be getting a permanent home soon. Doc’s Friends Inc., owner of the rare aircraft, announced plans to build a facility at the Dwight D. Eisenhower airport in Wichita, KS.

The 32,000 square foot facility will include a large hangar for storage and maintenance of the WWII bomber as well as space dedicated to an education center. Illustrations of the new building show large windows to view the aircraft along with a raised viewing balcony inside the hangar.

“We’ve said from the beginning that our vision was to build a permanent home for Doc in Wichita. Doc’s home will be a centerpiece to celebrate not only Wichita’s place in aviation history, but it will be a cornerstone to celebrate the men and women who built, maintained and served in the B-29 to protect our freedom. It will also be a unique place for future generations to connect with the majestic warbird through STEM education and perhaps they, too, will be inspired to a career in a STEM-related field,” says Jeff Turner, board chairman of Doc’s Friends Inc.

Over $4.5 million has been raised for the construction already, and further donations are being sought to reach the estimated $6.5 million final cost. Actual work on the site should begin in September and last for one year.

Doc is one of just two B-29s flying in the world today, the other being the Commemorative Air Force’s “Fifi”. Both aircraft will share the skies together for the first time next week during the 2017 EAA AirVenture airshow in Oshkosh, WI.

EAA AirVenture 2017 To Feature The Only Two B-29s Still Flying – “Doc” and “FIFI” Confirmed For Oshkosh!

Boeing B-29 Superfortress "FIFI" and Fireworks - EAA AirVenture Oshkosh

This year’s EAA AirVenture is set to feature not one but TWO flying B-29 Superfortresses. That’s right, both “FIFI” and “Doc”, the only flying B-29s in the world, are planning to attend!

Earlier today, Doc’s Friends, the group behind the aircraft, announced four stops on the first half of Doc’s planned 2017 tour. Doc recently completed ‘phase one’ of the initial flight testing program following a lengthy restoration in Kansas, which allows it to be flown to airshows. These events will be important fundraising opportunities for the group, and an exciting opportunity for fans to see a ‘new’ and extremely rare aircraft. Be sure to check our forums for the other dates and updates at the rest of the schedule is announced!

The Commemorative Air Force had previously released a partial schedule for their B-29, FIFI. FIFI is authorized to give rides, and tours the country each year to raise money for the organization.

The two aircraft will cross paths in Oshkosh, WI this July 24-30, during the massive EAA AirVenture airshow. We look forward to bringing you the sights and sounds of this amazing meetup between the only airworthy B-29s!

Update: Eagle-eyed fans have pointed out that these aircraft will actually cross paths earlier in the year, as both are scheduled to attend the airshow at Barksdale AFB in Louisiana in May! This summer will be very exciting for B-29 fans!

The 2016 edition of Heavy Bombers Weekend was held at the Southwest Wisconsin Regional Airport in Janesville, WI. The fly-in is a popular stop for warbirds traveling to the EAA AirVenture airshow in Oshkosh. Even on the opening day of the event, many different aircraft were on hand to take passengers for rides, including EAA’s B-17 Flying Fortress “Aluminum Overcast”, the Commemorative Air Force’s B-29 Superfortress “FIFI”, and the P-51 Mustang “Gunfighter”. Ground tours were included in the price of admission, giving all of the attendees a chance to touch and feel history. The event plans to shift back to its previous home in Madison, WI in 2017 and alternate between the two airports each year.

B-29 Superfortress “Doc” Has Successful First Flight!

B-29 Superfortress "Doc" First Flight

After a couple decades of hard work, the world gained a second flying B-29 Superfortress this morning when “Doc” took to the skies at McConnell AFB in Kansas. The Commemorative Air Force’s B-29 “Fifi” was previously the only flying example of the type. The first flight event was live streamed online for those not in the gathered crowd, and a replay can be viewed below for those who missed it. Now “Doc” will continue with a program of managed flight testing to fully prove all of the aircraft’s systems. If the timing works out, it may even be able to make an appearance at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh!

Bomber Heritage To Be Honored At Barksdale AFB Air Show With B-17/B-29/B-52 Formation Flight

Barksdale AFB Airshow - B-17 B-29 B-52 Bomber Heritage Flight 2016

In a post on the Commemorative Air Force B-29/B-24 Squadron’s Facebook page, it was announced that their B-29 Superfortress “Fifi” will be participating in a historic flight at the upcoming Barksdale AFB Defenders of Liberty Air Show, to be held on 30 April and 1 May this year. The post detailed that Fifi will be participating in a formation flight with one of Barksdale’s B-52 Stratofortresses as well as the Lone Star Flight Museum’s B-17 Flying Fortress “Thunderbird.”

While the formation of a B-52 and B-17 has been seen before in recent years, the addition of the B-29 is significant in a historic aspect. Arguably, strategic air power for the United States began shortly before World War II with the US Army Air Corps purchase of Boeing Y1B-17s. Later manufactured and flown in service as the B-17, it became the backbone of air power in the European theater. Following the success of the 17 and strategic bombing, the B-29 would take over as the dominant force behind America’s newly formed Air Force until it’s retirement in 1960. At the dawn of the jet age, the B-29 would then be replaced by multiple new bomber designs until the iconic B-52 ultimately seated itself as the primary bomber of strategic air power for the US Air Force from 1952 on, still serving today.

The planned flight holds significance in the additional regard that the Boeing Company, the manufacturer of all three airframes, celebrates their centennial this year. For spectators at the show, this will be a unique opportunity to see the lineage of US bomber technology and heritage sharing the skies as a veritable bridge across time joining past and present.

Restored B-29 Superfortress ‘Doc’ Will Roar To Life This Friday

According to Warbirds News, the B-29 Superfortress known as ‘Doc’ will have its first engine run this Friday at 8:00 a.m. The event will take place at Air Capital Flightline in Wichita, Kansas. Warbird fans have been eagerly awaiting news of the B-29 ever since its ‘rollout’ announcement back in March.

Once ‘Doc’ becomes airworthy, it will join ‘Fifi’ (pictured above) as the world’s only two airworthy B-29 Superfortresses. ‘Doc’ is very close to its first flight, with Warbirds News detailing the following as of a month ago:

– The aircraft has been partially fueled and checked closely for leaks, with none occurring.

– The fuel system is currently being fine-tuned prior to pressurization and engine start.

– Turbocharger casings are now installed on all four engines.

– Engine exhaust system installations are nearly complete.

– Final avionics components are ready to install, including the intercoms required for ground and air operations.

The event is open to media. AirshowStuff will not be attending, but we will keep you posted!
