New Details On Blue Angels’ Fat Albert Replacement Process

posted in: Jet Teams | 1

Fat Albert Replacement Confirmed

In a statement to NewsRadio 1620 in Pensacola, Naval Air Systems Command, commonly known as NavAir, confirmed that they are looking to the Royal Air Force for a replacement for a new Fat Albert.

The new report sheds a little more light on the situation after the original news that the RAF was listed in a contract to replace the current Fat Albert.

The biggest take away from the new post is that acquisition of a C-130J from the Royal Air Force would serve as a permanent replacement for the Blue Angels. The aircraft’s primary role is to transport the team’s equipment, and there is no confirmation yet whether the new C-130J will perform at airshows or not.

“High operational tempo and current in demand nature of Navy assets” was listed as the reason for the Navy looking to the Royal Air Force for a replacement instead of just taking one from the fleet. In addition, the current Fat Albert air frame is “nearing its structural end of life and the United Kingdom MOD C-130J presents an economical solution for its replacement.”

The Royal Air Force currently has a surplus of C-130J models in storage, making them an ideal source of a new Blue Angel support aircraft.

Fat Albert and the rest of the C-130T fleet has been grounded since last summer’s crash of a C-130 in Mississippi that killed all 16 service members. Before that, Bert missed airshows while undergoing an extensive overhaul.

At this time, the acquisition and delivery of the new C-130J is still in the planning stages. It is unknown when the new Fat Albert will be obtained by the team, let alone resume flying. It is also yet to be confirmed that the aircraft will don the famous blue and gold colors once acquired, but the fact that this is a permanent solution is promising.

We may very well be in for an entire show season without Fat Albert. Although disappointing for the fans, it is even harder on the team as they need to rely on other transportation. It may even lead to more broken jets as the team struggles to get spare parts in time to perform.

Quinte International Airshow At CFB Trenton Cancelled For 2018

posted in: Airshows | 6

Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 Hornet

Quinte International Airshow, a biennial event held at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton in Ontario, has been cancelled for 2018. The last show, which was hailed as a success, was held in 2016.

The Quinte International Airshow is hosted by 8 Wing Trenton and they are citing operational commitments as the reason for the cancellation of the 2018 airshow. 8 Wing operates several aircraft types from the CC-130 Hercules to the CC-144 Challenger, which is primarily used for VIP transport. The wing delivers humanitarian aid internationally and supports Canadian and Allied operations around the world.

It has been a busy time for the base this year, with operations assisting with the forest fires in British Columbia as well as assisting with the recent hurricanes in the Gulf and Caribbean. With those operational priorities in focus, the base made the difficult decision to call off the show for next year.

While the show is cancelled for 2018, 8 Wing Trenton is looking to work with community partners to potentially bring the Quinte International Air Show back again in the future.

Here is the full statement from 8 Wing Commander Colonel Mark Goulden on the airshow’s Facebook page:

Cancelling 2018

Operations at 8 Wing Trenton is our priority, whether it be helping Canadians during disasters such as the British Columbia wildfires, delivering humanitarian aid internationally, or supplying Canadian Armed Forces missions around the world. It is with these operational commitments in mind that 8 Wing Trenton has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2018 Quinte International Air Show.

Potential for the future

While it is impossible to predict our operational tempo at 8 Wing for the future, 8 Wing Trenton will be looking to work with community partners to explore the possibility of bringing the Quinte International Air Show back in the future.

Thankful

8 Wing Trenton is thankful for the tremendous support given to the Quinte International Air Show by sponsors and spectators. The support by our surrounding community is unparalled and that support allows us to execute the missions we are asked to do every day.

Fat Albert To Miss Start Of Blue Angels’ 2017 Airshow Season

posted in: Jet Teams | 6

C-130 Fat Albert Maintenance Overhaul

Last August, we reported that Fat Albert, the famous C-130 Hercules flown by the US Navy Blue Angels, was undergoing a massive maintenance overhaul at Hill AFB in Utah. The rework caused the beloved aircraft to miss the remainder of the 2016 season, and the Marine Corps crew borrowed a standard KC-130 to transport the team’s equipment. They could not perform in the backup, known always as “Ernie”, due to differences in the airframe.

Now, it looks like Bert will still be undergoing maintenance as the 2017 airshow season starts.

In a tweet to a fan on the Fat Albert Twitter Account, “Bert” announced she’ll miss the first show of the season at NAF El Centro in California. Other photos posted to Twitter show the propellers detached from the aircraft and the iconic gold paint on the nose of Fat Albert.

At this time, no return date for Fat Albert has been released but we have heard that the team expects to get the aircraft back in March. Once Bert is back in service, it will take the crew 5 or 6 weeks to train up to demo standards, so the first performance may not be until late April or early May. Get well soon, Bert!

US Navy Blue Angels To Headline EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017 With Full Aerobatic Performances

posted in: Airshows, Jet Teams | 0

US Navy Blue Angels

The famous US Navy Blue Angels flight demonstration team will headline EAA AirVenture for the first time this July. Although the show was previously listed on the preliminary 2017 schedule released last year, it was confirmed earlier this week when the updated 2017 Blue Angel schedule was announced.

The team has sent jets to AirVenture in the past, but it has never performed a full demonstration due to airspace limitations. In 2014, the show made special arrangements for a full-sized aerobatic box and hosted the US Air Force Thunderbirds. The Canadian Forces Snowbirds performed their full routine in 2016.

In order to establish the sterile aerobatic box, the crowd line is temporarily relocated further from the runway. Unfortunately this leaves numerous aircraft and structures in front of the crowd to block the view, and can create a dangerous stampede when the crowd is released to rush forward.

The event runs from Monday, July 24th through Sunday, July 30th at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, WI. The team is only scheduled to perform on the final Saturday and Sunday, but typically runs through a full routine as practice on the Thursday and Friday before a show. Any aerobatic practice would require the modified crowd line.
