Bombers Over Oshkosh! EAA AirVenture 2017 To Feature Triple Bomber Formation And Other Flybys

B-52 Stratofortress Bomber

The Experimental Aircraft Association’s (EAA) annual AirVenture fly-in and airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin is always a huge gathering of vintage and modern aviation. This year is no exception, especially now with the news that the United States Air Force is planning on a composite flyover consisting of the B-1 Lancer, B-2 Spirit, and B-52 Stratofortress in one formation on Saturday, July 29!

B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber - Spirit of St Louis Airshow 2016B-1B Lancer Bomber

According to the article, the Saturday parade of modern bombers will be followed by both B-29 Superfortresses “Fifi” and “Doc,” two B-17 Flying Fortresses, several B-25 Mitchells, the A-20 Havoc, and “more yet to be announced.” We couldn’t agree more with the statement “If 2017 is the year of the bomber, then Saturday is bomber day.”

The bomber bash will kick off with a flyover of the B-1 on Monday, July 24. The Lancer flies again on Wednesday, July 26, following the Doolittle Raid reenactment. The reenactment will feature more than a dozen B-25s in the air. A B-52 will also be on static display throughout the week.

Additionally, both B-29s will fly together on Friday to commemorate the aircraft type’s 75th anniversary. Notably, AirVenture will be the first time the only two flying Superfortresses have shared the skies together.

We hope that many of you bomber fans out there can find your way to the show July 24-30th. We hope to see you there! For more information about what’s coming to AirVenture 2017, visit the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017 thread on our forums.

WATCH: Lightning Strikes Oshkosh! F-35 Lightning II Arrival And Flybys

Lightning Strikes Twice!

Check out this awesome video from AirshowStuff.com where two USAF F-35A Lightning II aircraft perform multiple low approaches during the first-ever EAA AirVenture display of the F-35! You’ll get to see the two Lightnings fly by multiple times. And where there’s lightning, there’s always thunder! You’ll almost *feel* the thunder of the engines as these two unique aircraft fly past. Watch as the vapor comes off the wingtips as they pull around for another pass and examine the angles and lines of this awesome fifth-generation USAF fighter. And finally, you’ll get a close-up look at them as they land and taxi past you, all in HD!

The F-35 Lightning II is designed to perform multiple missions, from strike and attack missions to air defense. The F-35A is the Air Force’s version, and this was the first time that the F-35s were brought out for display at the massive EAA AirVenture airshow in Oshkosh. While plagued with various issues and cost overruns throughout its development, there’s no denying that the F-35 is an exciting aircraft to see ripping up the skies over and over again, so turn up the sound, put the video on full screen mode, and enjoy watching lightning striking twice!

USAF and Lockheed Martin plan F-35 Demos for 2018

The United States Air Force and Lockheed Martin are reportedly starting to develop an aerobatic demonstration routine with their newest fighter jet, the F-35A Lightning II, for the 2018 airshow season. They have been developing the routine and practicing it in the simulator this year, and they are ready to begin practice flights at their F-35 production facility in Fort Worth.

Most of us will have to wait until 2018 to see the demo, but those attending the 2017 Paris Airshow will actually see the first performance. The Air Force says they will “build our demonstration profile based on the experiences and lessons learned from F-35 participation in other airshows and the Lockheed Martin demonstration at the 2017 Paris Air Show.”

The F-35 Heritage Flight Team stood up at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona in 2016. The team performed at 15 airshows in 2016 and is scheduled to perform at 14 airshows in 2017. It has not been announced where the demonstration team would be based out of, but the Heritage Team operates out of Luke AFB in Arizona. We’ll provide more information as we learn it.

2016 F-35A Lightning II Heritage Flight Schedule Released

posted in: Airshows, Military, Schedules | 3

USAF F-35 Lightning II

As we’ve reported previously, 2016 is an exciting time for F-35 fans because the aircraft will be introduced to the public as part of the USAF Heritage Flight program this year. At select show sites, an F-35 Lightning II will join in formation with the F-22, F-16, and/or one or more warbirds to honor the Air Force’s heritage. The 2016 airshows that will feature this incredible sight are listed below, as released by the US Air Force. Other variants of the jet will also make airshow appearances, including in the UK. No matter what your stance is on this polarizing fighter, in our opinion it’s always great to have new additions to the Heritage Flight!

Will you see the F-35 in 2016? Let us know! Post on our Facebook page page and make sure you share pictures after the show!

F-22 Raptor Demo Team Going International Again In 2016

posted in: Airshows, Military | 0

USAF F-22 Raptor

The USAF F-22 Raptor demonstration team schedule that was released today (along with the F-16 Fighting Falcon demonstration team schedule) contains a few surprises for fans, the biggest of which is the number of international appearances. International appearances are always noteworthy for the F-22 since many fans are so eager to see what is arguably the world’s most advanced fighter. These appearances are also somewhat rare due to budget constraints and limited aircraft availability, not to mention the inherent security requirements for the secretive aircraft.

The 2016 schedule includes four airshows outside the US; Trenton and London in Ontario, Canada, as well as the International Air & Space Fair (FIDAE) in Chile and the famed Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) in the United Kingdom. FIDAE and RIAT both hosted the team in 2010, and a planned RIAT appearance in 2008 was canceled at the last moment due to weather. The team has also performed in South Korea, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates in the last few years.

International trips are often met with frustration in the US airshow community as every weekend away is one less opportunity for US crowds to see it, especially with the schedule limitations in the past few years. However, the aircraft is unquestionably one method for the US to send a message about its military might. Given the current state of the world, it isn’t too surprising that the powers that be would send it to perform on a world stage like FIDAE and RIAT. Hopefully many of the worldwide Raptor fans get a chance to see it!
