Lens Upgrades

Post by alexp2805- » Fri Aug 09, 2019 10:49 pm

Hey all!

I have the Canon EOS T-6 Rebel camera and I am looking to upgrade to a more powerful and more "zoom" lens. I have the 75-300mm lens but want something a little bit better with the zoom. Any ideas?

Thanks, Alex

The 75-300 is the standard starter lens for just about everyone, and the next step up is usually one of these:

Sigma 100-400
Tamron 100-400
Sigma 150-600 (two versions of this)
Tamron 150-600
Sigma 60-600
Canon 100-400L
Canon 100-400L Mk II

With lenses, you get what you pay for in terms of quality. Lenses on this list range from $600 to $2300ish. There's really no way to upgrade your lens for less than $600.

It looks like Tamron also makes an 18-400 which is insanely flexible and would serve as the single lens you'd need for statics and flying. The image quality surely isn't amazing but it could be a great fit for you for the time being, and it's budget friendly at about $650.

Many of them can be compared on BH Photo, but you can usually find better prices on some of them at the Canon Refurb Store (always my first choice) or through the Canon Price Watch FB page. There may be a separate Sigma Price Watch and/or Tamron Price Watch, I'm not sure.

Nearly full list of options, except the 18-400. Ignore all 200mm or 300mm lenses as these will not be an upgrade.

You i haven't really said just what the intended use is but if it's to shoot aviation you'll want the long end to be in the 400 to 600 range. A good lens & good panning skills can be rewarding but it's also important to understand that the same lens performs better on more expensive bodies because they have faster / more accurate AF systems. The lens & camera both have something to do with the photo captured. This isn't a criticism of your camera & a better lens is the more important upgrade.. You don't have to join this forum to use it but I highly recommend using it & joining it too (I'm a long time member) because it's a great resource. (lots of aviation stuff in the Transportation section) This is where you can get lots of user info on just about any common lens.

As an FYI I shoot Canon & my full scale aviation lenses are the 28-300 L IS, 100-400 L IS (was ver 1 but I now have ver 2 but haven't used it for full scale but have for radio control events) & the Sigma 150-600 C which I prefer over either 100-400 L)

Screen name at POTN is cicopo.

So if I were to purchase the Tamron 18-400, I could get rid of my 75-300mm and 18-55mm lens then? I'd most likely sell them online somewhere and then save up for the rest.

Thanks for the info, Ryan!
