Oregon International Airshow - Sept 28-30, 2018

Post by Bokimon » Thu Jun 21, 2018 4:07 am

Hey All,

Another airshow worthy of mention this summer is the Oregon airshow in September this year. It is a little bit on the late side especially in the summer but the set list looks pretty good with a strong Canadian contingent.

Otherwise there are air displays of ANG F-15, CF-18, A-10A, B-25, Snowbirds, a HUEY and a COBRA Helicopter.. I have never seen a military chopper air demo before. The static list is weak but it will fill up as the dates get closer. A Cdn group may include a CP-140 Aurora and another CF18 possibly.
There is also an airplane restoration company who will bring out their planes for display and last time I checked they were working on an ex Taiwan Air Force F-5 Tiger, and a Mig 21 Fishbed. Also Alaska airlines does some flight demos too with their Dash 8D and a 737 in the form of some neat flypasses.

Anybody else have any experience with going to this airshow? I am actually debating to either shorten Abby to just Friday evening or skip it completely and just go to Oregon in late Sept to do the weekend there. PDX is pretty good for military spotting as well since the ANG shares the rwys with the civil guys.

The Huey and the Cobra I believe are from the Olympic Flight Museum so they won't be currently active military but they do put on an amazing demo.

I've been to this show many times before and the static is always extremely weak compared to most other shows. Regarding the museum aircraft collection they usually pull out a few each year but always seem to be the same ones.

I would go to Abbotsford for more than one day because the show is better, statics are significantly better and the price of Abbotsford is cheaper if that affects you in any way.

I think I will pass on the cold lake airshow and do just 1 day of Abby and push for Portland!
It looks too good to miss and I'm sure more acts will still to follow including maybe an F22 or F35 appearance.
Not to mention the lighting is absolute prime from the viewing area and orientation.

I highly doubt that unless you have specific intel to indicate otherwise. If I were you, and $$/travel time isn't a concern, I'd go to Cold Lake over Hillsboro. Guaranteed F-22 appearance, plus the CF-18/CT-155 mass attack. Also sounds like they have a NORAD formation planned which will be very rare to see.

Just saw on their Facebook page a USAF C-130 from Minneapolis will be joining the performer lineup and will be used as a jump ship. One could hope for some fly-bys?

Oregon does have some civil action too in the form of a D8-Q400 and a 737 from Alaska which is pretty nice to see!
No insider scoops sadly, just hopeful speculation. HIO will be combined with an overall Portland trip to do regular spotting and some tax free shopping ontop of this airshow. Facility itself, the lighting is perfect as the sun will be behind you in the peak afternoon/early eve and viewing is quite close at 150m to the rwy centerline and only 35m to the taxiway where the hot items always taxi by. You can feel the heat from their exhausts, especially when they spool it up..
Also you get to play with an F-15 minigun as the crew demonstrate how to quickly eat thru an entire belt full of ammo in mere seconds.
Commuting wise, it is the only airshow in the world where I can take the metro and walk 5mins from the stop to the main gates, no need for a car!

Therefore I have decided to pass on Cold Lake, F22 is nice but it no longer attracts that must visit pull on me anymore..
But if it comes to Oregon, I will book my tickets at once rather than waiting on a bit more like currently..
I got to post up some past airshow pics of this now that I found a proper forum to share this!

Following up on this, it will be flying out of McChord AFB and perform flybys.

T-1 Removed from the static list, however an E-2, CT-155, T-45 and F/A-18 Super Hornet have been added to static! Id say thats a fair trade.

Some interesting hint dropped by OIA on facebook today, "We have some EXCITING news! Get ready, because NORAD's CF-18 Hornet is... WAIT. We can't reveal it quite yet... Can you try and guess what it is? Stay tuned for more to come!"

My guess is a CF-18 friday night demo.

Also the USAF T-6 Texan II has been removed from static.
