Leszno "Antidote" Airshow

Post by Adam » Fri Jul 24, 2020 5:02 pm

Nice to see some a smattering of new events springing up despite the obvious challenges. After the cancellation of June's AirSound Festival in Leszno, Poland, the organisers have just announced the Antidotum Airshow for Aug 28th-29th August. As usual it will be a mix of day and night displays, with night displays being accompanied by live music. Visitors will be required to stay 2m apart from each other and wear masks at all times. Acts are being announced several at a time in the runup to the show.

Confirmed displays
  • MiG-15 LIM-2 - day
  • FireFlies display team (x2 RV-4) - day & night
  • Team Blanix (x2 Blanik) - day
  • Flying Bulls (T-28B Trojan) - day
  • Flying Bulls Aerobatic Team (x4 SBach 342) - day
  • Aerosparx (x2 Grob 109b) - day & night
  • Zelazny (up to x5 Extra 300L/Zlin Z-50)
  • Marek Choim Extra 330SC - day & night
  • Flying Dragons (x7 paramotors) - day & night
More to come, but it's already shaping up very nicely indeed and I cannot wait to visit. Leszno has been on my bucket list for a long time.

Nice to see plenty more added to the line up as the official schedule is released. In addition to the schedule below, the Hatz & Tercel (biplane & autogyro) duo have also been recently announced, and will presumably feature in the daytime portion of the display. For a relatively small airshow at a grass airstrip, being held during a pandemic on a very tight budget, I'd say that's looking pretty tidy.

WHAT A SHOW!! I don't say this lightly, but I probably enjoyed the Leszno Antidote Airshow more than any other I have attended.

The line up may have appeared at first glance like "all filler, no killer", but virtually all the acts were intimate enough, and flown in a sufficiently exciting fashion, to be every bit as absorbing as a fast jet demo or any big name act. The site layout at Leszno is perfect, with two grass runways in front of the crowd and a right-angled end to the crowdline, which most of the performers used to perform wonderful banked topsides around the edge of the crowd area. The flying in general was exceptionally low and close, without being unsafe, and covered almost all facets of general aviation - classic jets, gliders, paragliders, paramotors, kit planes, skydiving, unlimited aerobatics, you name it. Most of the flying was accompanied by live music from a local band, The Cellos, on a stage in front of the crowd at show centre.

The stand-out displays for me were the SB Lim-2 (Polish-built MiG-15), which is perhaps the closest I've ever got to a jet in flight at a public airshow despite me being just a few feet in front of the regular crowd area at the time, and the Flying Bulls Aerobatic Team, who, in the words of one of the other display pilots, "make the impossible look easy - and what they do is impossible!" Cue 18 minutes of tightly-choreographed negative-G formation aerobatics, mind-bending formation rolls and countless manoeuvres in mirror formation, much of which isn't attempted by any other aerobatic team on the planet.

Red Bull's other acts are also worthy of mentioning. The T-28 had perhaps the best smokewinders I've ever seen at an airshow, backing up a superbly competent and very close display, and Team Blanix with their pair of Blanik gliders were utterly mesmerising and captivated the whole crowd from their opening synchronised spins to their close formation orbits with fireworks and coloured smoke, which ended the show.

Also of note: The Zelazny aerobatic team with three Z-50s had an imaginative and highly original routine, starting with a very impressive opposition take-off, and packed with manoeuvres which were very hard to predict; the Flying Dragons paramotor team's night show is unique thanks to its innovative use of lights and pyrotechnics timed to music; Aerosparx's night display was its usual pyrotechnic extravaganza; Marek Choim, debuting a new paint scheme on his Extra 330SC, was one of the most engaging solo aerobatic displays I've yet seen - in part, perhaps, because of how close he came to the crowd between the higher, vertical manoeuvres; and finally, the Beech 18 was flown with all the aggression of Marek's Extra and was very memorable as a result.

Two videos below, for now: the Flying Bulls Aerobatic Team and SB Lim-2 (watch the latter's opening flyby, if nothing else). I will be making a fuller video in due course.
