Hot on the heels of TOM's announcement, Dayton has announced they will also be doing a drive-in show for 2021.
2021 CenterPoint EnergyDayton Air Show Presented by Kroger
…Thunderbirds and new Drive-In format to Take Off!

CenterPoint Energy Dayton Air Show officials announced today that the 2021 CenterPoint Energy Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger will take off on July 10th and 11th. This year’s headlining attraction will be the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. 2021 will mark the 47th anniversary of Dayton’s premier summer event held annually at the Dayton International Airport.

This year, the show will move to a “Drive-In” format to align the show with current health guidelines and ensure the safety of guests. It’s a unique and very exciting development. The show will convert its spectator area to a drive-in theater-type parking lot. Guests will be able to purchase 20’ x 20’ Private Viewing Area using half the area to park their car and the other half to view the show in tailgate fashion (see below).

Ticket prices will be incredible. Starting at just $99 for up to 6 guests for general admission and front row Platinum viewing areas for 6 guests for $199. The best part is you can drive in and out in the comfort of your own vehicle and bring along a cooler with food and beverages. Simply sit down in your dedicated space with family and friends and enjoy the show. Restrooms will be located nearby and mobile concessions with food, beverage and merchandise will be traveling the aisles if you would like to make a purchase.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have the Thunderbirds in 2021 and introduce this incredible drive-in show to Dayton,” said Scott Buchanan, Chairman of the United States Air & Trade Show Board of Trustees, producers of the show. “This new format is safe and will bring the utmost in convenience to our guests. It will be a first for Dayton and our fans are going to love it!” Buchanan added.

The show has been working closely with health and other government officials to implement new measures to produce a show this year and keep patrons safe. The drive-in show offers outstanding social distancing features. Under this year’s new measures, guests, show staff and volunteers will be required to wear an appropriate face covering and social distance when necessary. The show will provide hand sanitizers on the grounds and implement enhanced cleaning procedures in restrooms and other areas.

Show attendance will also be reduced and some areas closed to accommodate current health guidelines. Specialty seating areas will not be available and there will be no static aircraft displays. The show will be broadcasted over its normal public address system by its outstanding announcers, Rob Reider and Danny Clisham. The exciting action will also be broadcast on FM radio.

Drive-in show guests will enjoy a full four-hour feature flying show in 2021. Joining the world-renowned U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will be an all-star lineup including the U.S. Army Golden Knights, AeroShell Aerobatic Team, the amazing Shockwave Jet Truck, all-new Lucas Oil Airshows, and Jacquie B “Ladies, it’s Time to Fly” aerobatics. Additional attractions to the 2021 show will be announced soon.

This year is a special year for the Thunderbirds in Dayton. Flying in Thunderbird # 6 as opposing solo will be Dayton native, Major Kyle Oliver. Born at Wright-Patterson AFB Medical Center, Kyle went on to graduate from Beavercreek High School and Ohio State University. He was inspired to join the U.S. Air Force while watching the Thunderbirds as a teen visitor to the Dayton Air Show. What a true Dayton, Ohio homecoming!
2021 drive-in tickets are on sale now at the show’s website, https://daytonairshow.com/. Customers can enjoy a print-at-home option on all website purchases. Sorry, drive-in tickets will not be available at Kroger Stores or for purchase on-site. Patrons are urged to print their tickets at home for placement in their window to enhance their drive-in parking experience.

The air show is recommending that customers planning to attend the special 2021 CenterPoint Energy Presented by Kroger Drive-In Show make their purchases early. Tickets are expected to sell out quickly with the limited attendance, group pricing and added value of personal coolers permitting patrons to bring in food and beverages from home.

Any tickets or special seating that were purchased for the 2021 show before the change to a drive-in format will be honored at the 2022 show on July 30th and 31st headlined by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels or they can also be refunded. Visit the show’s website for more information https://daytonairshow.com/
The pricing difference with TOM is pretty stark - in Dayton you get to see the full show with a guaranteed front row spot for only $14 more than an afternoon-only ticket at TOM

Sounds like it could be a great alternative to TOM. The TOM organizers should take look at Sky Drive (from last year) and Dayton as examples of how to execute a great Drive in style show.

For a show with no static display and nothing other than the Thunderbirds $99 is pretty steep. Not everyone has 5 other people that would like to go or would even fit in most cars today. Not everyone will get Front Row seats like someone else posted. You will be stuck behind Bubba with huge camper van or pick up truck. Dayton will screw it up and no one will like it except the people collecting all the money for a mediocre airshow. Limit the show to people who have had the vaccine or issue hasmat suits if they are really that worried about Covid. If you are so afraid of catching Covid stay home ! I get so tired of government snow flakes ruining everyone else's lives.

If you don’t feel necessary to pay the money, then don’t. There’s no reason to be that upset over a drive-in style format. Sure there have been better performers with a static area, but beggars can’t be choosers in a time like now. I purchased my tickets within the hour of the announcement, because like many others, I want to support the show in hopes of a return to a normal format next year and years beyond.
