Translated from Polish.
"Will the Air Show 2021 in Radom take place on time? Konrad Frysztak, MP, has doubts"

Last Friday, member of the Civic Coalition Konrad Frysztak organized a press conference. During the meeting, he discussed, among others, the topic of air shows that would take place in Radom on the last weekend of August in 2021.

More than a hundred days ago, Frysztak issued a parliamentary question to the senator of Law and Justice, who is also the deputy minister in the Ministry of National Defense. - On August 7, 2019, Deputy Minister Skurkiewicz said that a decision was made to prepare the Air Show. In one of the programs, he claimed that the F-35 plane would arrive at dynamic shows. A hundred days ago I asked ministers Skurkiewicz and Błaszczak whether a team for organization had been appointed, how often it held meetings, at what stage are the preparations and whether the deadline may be jeopardized due to the reconstruction of the airport. I also asked if international air crews and an F-35 pilot had already been invited. Unfortunately, I have been waiting for an answer for a hundred days, said MP Konrad Frysztak during the conference, presenting his interpellation.

As the former vice-president of Radom said, the air show is one of the most important events for the inhabitants of Radom. - This is our city's celebration. Many people come, also from abroad. As Deputy Minister Skurkiewicz does not answer, I wanted to ask via the media if these were only promises that are made before the elections? - He was asking.

At the same time, Frysztak noticed that when the city was organizing the shows alone, the organization of subsequent Air Shows began the day after the end of the two-day, sky-high spectacle. - Let me remind you that it was not fully known recently whether the Air Show would take place. I understand that there is still a year to this event, but I would like to know whether the organization is a truth or a communication sewer - concluded Konrad Frysztak, member of the Civic Coalition.

On Friday, we tried to contact Deputy Minister Wojciech Skurkiewicz. His cell phone was silent, and the words of the Ministry of National Defense indicate that the former candidate for the presidency of Radom is on vacation.

The Air Show will be held in Radom in two years at the earliest. Although almost an airstrip has been built on Sadków, the ongoing and planned works prevent planes from taking off and landing.

In radio broadcasts at various stations, Deputy Minister of National Defense Wojciech Skurkiewicz informs that preparations are currently underway for the organization of next year's Air Show in Radom, but whether they will take place will determine the progress of works on the construction of the airport. If it is, as the deputy minister of national defense says, the military are trying unnecessarily and wasting time preparing an event that cannot take place. Also, the military from Radom, who now commute to work in Dęblin, must get used to the idea that this situation will last for at least two more years.

Currently, pavement works on the runway are coming to an end in Sadków. A runway is needed to organize air shows, and besides, theoretically, it would also be possible to use the existing military infrastructure, i.e. the existing aprons, as well as other facilities of the 42 Air Training Base.

It turns out, however, that as long as the airport is not formally admitted to operation, no aircraft flights, neither military nor civil, are possible. We asked the "Polish Airports" State Enterprise, which is carrying out investments at the Radom airport, to clarify the issue of whether it is at least theoretically possible to reconcile the works carried out at the airport with limited air traffic, carried out under certain conditions.

“Thanks to the excellent cooperation with the Polish Armed Forces, in particular with the 42nd Air Training Base, training of a different nature was developed and introduced at the airport in Radom. Military pilots use helicopters during construction works at the port. Both military and civil aircraft will be able to return to operations at the airport after the port is formally approved for operation. " - we read in response to our question, which was given by the spokesman of Przedsiębiorstwo Państwowe "Porty Lotnicze", Piotr Rudzki.

The runway itself is almost ready, but other works related to this investment will still be carried out. A runway drainage system must be built, and a retention reservoir to collect excess water will most likely be built next to the runway. Then other works will be carried out, and at the latest a tender will be awarded for the design and installation of navigation lights on the runway and aprons.

In addition, for the next two years, works will be carried out on the construction of new taxiways, aprons and de-icing of aircraft, the terminal, the airport fire station and the air traffic control tower, the administration building and facilities for the Border Guard and customs officers, as well as the construction of external and internal access roads. . According to the adopted schedule, on June 28, 2022, the runway will be ready for civil use.

Another issue is the location of the next editions of the international Air Show. The Deputy Minister of National Defense, Wojciech Skurkiewicz, assures that there is no discussion about the location of the shows other than Radom. Let us recall that the international Air Show has been held in Poland since 1991. It was then that the first Air Show was organized at the Ławica airport in Poznań. Later, in 1995 and 1998, the aviation world hosted Dęblin twice. From 2000 to 2003, shows were organized every year in Radom. Later, the time intervals between individual editions were increased to two years. This cycle changed in 2018 when the Air Show was organized year after year. This happened because in 2018 the 100th anniversary of the Polish military aviation was celebrated. If the two-year cycle had been followed, the next event should take place in 2020.

In the past, the location of the event in Radom was threatened by the aspirations of other cities, but was questioned by some military officials. Among other things, it was considered whether to move the event to Powidz, where there was a longer runway than in Radom, which allowed the reception of heavy planes. It was also said that the Air Show should take place in Dęblin, where viewers can look at the planes "with the sun", and not as it is in Radom, "against the sun". Poznań also submitted its aspirations. Each time the event finally returned to Radom.

Not hugely surprising but it doesn't look like the airport will be ready in time for an airshow next year. Although work on the runway itself is almost complete, other essential infrastructure like the drainage system will not be complete until June 2022, and the airport will not be ready for full operations until that point. For the time being, the airport is being used for helicopter training flights only.

With the famous Radom International Air Show not taking place this year, it's nice to see that the 42nd Training Air Base in Radom will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a small Air Show on Saturday, July 31st. The flying displays will include the PZL-M28 Skytrucks, F-16 Tiger Demo Team Poland, Aerobatic Team Orlik and the Biało-Czerwone Iskry with what could be their last ever appearance over Radom.
