What a top-notch event the Battle of Britain Airshow was, especially with the lovely skies on Saturday! The "big wing" was a superb finale to the show: a roughly half-hour set piece involving 12 Spitfires and 4 Hurricanes, initially with all 16 aircraft taking off in quick succession before John Romain commenced an absolutely sublime solo display in the desert camo Spit Mk.V - one of the best Spitfire solos I can remember seeing. The solo display paused three times for 15-ship close formation passes by the main formation, after which the Hurricanes and Spit V returned to land, leaving the airspace clear for a final 11-ship pass by the remaining Spitfires. Paul Bonhomme in the NHS-liveried PR.XI then broke away for a solo display of his own, initially quite high over the other 10 aircraft as they landed, but coming lower once they were all on the ground. For the full half hour, there was virtually no commentary or music, which made the moment feel even more magical.

A quick canter through some of the other highlights, though. My other favourite display was the USA vs. Germany dogfight, with three Buchons arriving in formation for several flypasts, later to be split into smaller groups and chased around the airfield by two Mustangs and a Thunderbolt. Of the solo displays, TFC's Bearcat and P-75 Hawk were particularly of note. Historic Helicopters also made for a nostalgic sight with the Whirlwind HAR.10, Wessex HU.5 and Sea King HC.4, providing solo displays from each but also moments to see two or three helicopters in formation; the Wessex's solo was particularly pleasing.

Above all, how nice it was to return to a full-scale, fluid and highlight-packed airshow at Duxford which certainly felt to be a cut above their smaller Summer event. It also brought to mind that IWM curator who claimed the reason they booted Flying Legends out was because "for a number of years it has been out performed by shows with less niche appeal." Last weekend was, by quite some margin, the most Flying Legends-esque airshow organised by IWM in many years, with all but four acts featuring WWII warbirds and all bar one featuring warbirds of some description - a heartening thing to see.

The IWM Duxford Airshow Team have been very busy this year with two major airshows taking place alongside a series of several flying days in difficult circumstances. Over the August Bank Holiday they added another string to their bow with the first Duxford Flying Evening with contributions from several home-based and visiting operators. RAF Typhoon FGR.4 solo display added to the October 9th Flying Day - it's basically just a rebranded Autumn Airshow at this point, which is an excellent development. But at Flying Day prices! Just goes to show what incredible value for money IWM membership can offer.

The highlight of the IWM Duxford year is the Battle of Britain Airshow and in 2021 it was undoubtedly the UK’s premier historic aviation showcase. The Supermarine Spitfire was at the heart of the 2021 edition of the show with the type celebrating its 85th Anniversary. Spitfire’s featured en-masse not only marking the evolution of famous fighter, but also reflecting the many nations that flew the aircraft. A full image gallery and review can be found HERE.

Awesome photos! That mass formation of Spitfires and Hurricanes must have been incredible.

IWM Duxford’s final Flying Day of the season closed out the 2021 UK Display Season. Dubbed ‘The Best of 2021’ it was in-fact close to a full-on airshow featuring everything from 1930’s fighters through to aerobatic biplanes and modern military hardware. The day also saw the very welcome return of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Avro Lancaster PA474 to the display circuit. A full review and image gallery can be found HERE.
