Falling neatly on to the 77th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings, IWM Duxford’s second flying day of the year was a treat for all fans of the ‘heavy iron’ warbirds. A full review and more images from the day can be found HERE.

Methinks that list was published before checking with some of the participants whether they are actually available next Saturday!

IWM website has caught up with reality and removed the F260 and P-40 from this Saturday's line up.

Some very grey skies for the third Duxford Flying Day of the year which was dubbed 'Thank You Dads.' The low cloudbase ruled out any complex formations or combinations so six solo displays from Duxford resident aircraft were presented. More images and a full review HERE.

I've got to say, I thought yesterday was by far the best of the four Flying Days I've done yet - very close in terms of quality and variety of flying acts to a "proper" airshow, only shorter. And we were so lucky with the weather, 5 hours of solid rain was forecast but all of it seemed to miss Duxford by a few miles one side or the other.

The flying programme changed again since the published list, mainly due to weather-related cancellations - the T-67 and one Buchon couldn't make it in and a P-40F was added. The first display was the highlight for me - a wonderful three-ship from The Fighter Collection consisting of a P-40F, FM2 Wildcat and Spitfire Mk.V. After a tight formation arrival, all three then put on lovely, flowing solo displays, of which the Wildcat was my personal favourite, coming down very low on several occasions including one fantastic low pass, diving down the side of the hill on the far side of the runway, heading straight at the crowd.

This was followed by some formation passes by a Chipmunk and Fox Moth, James Hepnar in the Extra 300 (a more complex display than last year, I thought), and then a four-ship involving TFC's Spitfire Mk.V, Spitfire Mk.IX MH.434, P-51D "Contrary Mary" and an HA-112 Buchon. After some tight four-ship passes, they split into a tailchase routine, which gradually morphed into pairs passes as the front two and back two aircraft seperated into two elements. Closing out the show was John Romain in the "NHS Spitfire", which was perhaps the only display that didn't quite live up to expectations as it felt a little tamer than the previous Romain Spitfire solos I've seen.

This time I was behind one of PlanesTV's cameras for the live broadcast rather than filming for my own purposes. The broadcast is still available below, and I've also attached a couple of gifs from the stream which are (mostly) my camerawork - one of the Wildcat dive-bombing the crowd, and another of the large warbird formation taking off. I'm sure PTV won't mind! The pressure of live broadcasting as part of a team was fantastically good fun.
