Airshow Action 2021

Post by RyanS » Fri Apr 22, 2022 3:12 pm

Adam and I decided to bring back the Airshow Action series this year with the same sort of format as we did in 2019. There are two videos: Part 1 is focused on military performances and Part 2 is focused on vintage warbirds. Both are an hour long and feature Adam's excellent editing and narration. Part 1 went up last week, and Part 2 will go up either next week or the week after.

Through the combined efforts of AirshowStuff and This is Flight, we bring you Airshow Action 2021!

Airshow Action features two videos. This video is part one and focuses on some of the most interesting and unique military airshow performances during the year. Check back later for part two, which focuses on vintage warbird aircraft!

00:00 - Intro

02:12 - The US Navy Blue Angels saw a year of firsts, including the debut their new F-18 Super Hornet jets during the Sun 'n Fun airshow in Lakeland, Florida, and the first public performance of their new C-130J Super Hercules "Fat Albert" at Airshow London in Canada.

07:15 - The Polish Air Force shows off their own C-130E Hercules with a spectacular night time flare drop at the Antidotum Airshow in Lezno, Poland.

09:16 - Patrouille Gusto Delta of the French Air Force display a pair of Mirage 2000s, the types first airshow participation since 2018.

12:26 - The California Capital Airshow offered a glimpse into the coming future of US Navy air power with the joint displays and formation flybys by the F-35C Lightning II and F/A-18F Super Hornet, both types expected to serve as the mainstays of carrier air wings for years to come.

15:46 - EAA AirVenture Oshkosh celebrated past and present military aviation with both a US Air Force Heritage Flight - a special four-ship formation featuring a P-38 Lightning, two P-51 Mustangs, and a USAF F-16 Fighting Falcon - and the US Navy Legacy Flight combining a T-28 Trojan, F4U Corsair, and two EA-18G Growlers. The Growlers also performed a superb two-ship display.

19:15 - Air Legend Paris hosts a pair of French Navy Dassault Rafale Ms, performing a special formation flypast with two F4U Corsairs in addition to a two-ship tactical role demonstration.

22:26 - We stay in France, where the Patrouille de France join together with a P-38 Lightning to celebrate "Le Petit Prince" and its author, a French Air Force pilot during WWII.

27:09 - Two looks at the surprisingly nimble Airbus A400 tactical airlifter; one from the French Air Force at Air Legend, and a rare airshow performance by the German Luftwaffe at Thunder Over Michigan.

30:09 - Another surprisingly agile aircraft, the US Navy's E-2 Hawkeye, performs at Airshow London

31:54 - A pair of brief but rare airshow appearances by military aircraft; two B-1B Lancers lighting the afterburners on a twilight formation flyover and a secretive RC-135S Cobra Ball flyby in Kansas.

33:00 - Grab a seat inside the chase car for a U-2 Dragon Lady takeoff and landing demonstration in Sacramento

35:38 - We celebrate special paint schemes on display in 2021, including the RAF Eurofighter Typhoon FGR.4 "Blackjack" scheme, the USAF F-16 Viper Demo Team's "Venom" jet, and a pair of A-10 Warthogs; the Southeast Asia Camouflage "Red River Hawg" from the A-10 Demo Team and a black and gray A-10 from the "Black Snakes" of the Indiana Air National Guard.

42:00 - The US Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) takes over EAA AirVenture Oshkosh with special appearances by MC-130 Commando IIs, CV-22 Ospreys, an AC-130J Ghostrider gunship, and other rarely seen Spec Ops support aircraft. Watch for the twilight airfield assault and the night-time angel flares!

44:50 - The Royal Air Force Falcons parachute team marks their 60th anniversary with an entirely new routine

46:10 - The Canadian Forces Snowbirds celebrate their own 50th anniversary with a special paint scheme on their CT-114 Tutor jets

48:57 - More than 60 aircraft participated in a massive flyover to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Australian Air Force. The formations brought together warbirds as well as modern military aircraft like F-35 Lightning IIs, F-18 Classic Hornets and Super Hornets, EA-18G Growlers, C-130 Hercules, a P-3 Orion and P-8 Pegasus formation, and the Roulettes national display team.

53:51 - Another look at the RAAF and their first F-35 Lightning II demonstration at Wings Over Illawarra as well as the final display of the F/A-18 Classic Hornet before the types retirement from RAAF service.

58:50 - Part two teaser

Thank you to our friends at This is Flight for putting this together! http://thisisflight.net/

And here is part 2! Of all the video work I do each year, this series is always my favourite and I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed collating, editing, scripting and narrating it all.

00:00 - Intro

02:15 - We start things off BIG, with a special World War II mega-airshow at EAA AirVenture. The show uses more than 40 aircraft to walk through major events in the war from the Battle of Britain through the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Doolittle Raid, to D-Day, V-E day, and the bombing of Japan

10:38 - Air Legend Paris presents a European take on warbirds, including an ultra-rare M.S.406, a makeshift version of 'Tora Tora Tora', a reenactment of the final dogfight of WWII between two liaison aircraft, and more

20:06 - Classic jets take a starring role at the Northern Illinois Air Show, featuring flybys from an F-86 Sabre and rare T-2 Buckeye

21:23 - More vintage jet action as an L-29 Delfin demonstrates its ability to use a grass runway at the Antidotum Airshow in Poland, followed by a sunset display by a MiG-15

24:00 - The successor to the MiG-15 is the MiG-17, and we got as close to one as you can get at the Thunder Over The Heartland airshow in Kansas. Hold on tight as Randy Ball gives you a 600 mph flyby about 50 feet away!

25:00 - We head down south to enjoy the only flyable Canberra TT.18 bomber at Wings Over Illawarra in Australia

26:16 - Our focus shifts from vintage jet warbirds to special formations, starting with a newly restored F4U Corsair and A-4 Skyhawk joining together for an unofficial US Navy Legacy Flight in Waukegan

28:06 - The past and present join together again with a special gunship heritage formation featuring a Vietnam War-era Douglas AC-47 'Spooky' and a modern AC-130J 'Ghostrider'. This was part of the tribute to Air Force Special Operations Command at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh

29:02 - More from Oshkosh as we look at the massive warbird trainer formations that AirVenture is known for

30:27 - Air Expo 2021, put on by Wings of the North, brought together a number of warbirds in rare and unusual formations such as a Navy flight with a TBM Avenger, F4U Corsair, and FM-2 (F4F) Wildcat)

32:06 - Back to Australia for a 7-ship 'Balbo' formation make up of a Hudson, Kittyhawk, Spitfire, Avenger, Corsair, Trojan, and Boomerang

35:52 - We look at the first of several new warbird teams that have been recently established, like the Gipsy Pair, Vintage Pair, the Ultimate Fighters - an amazing formation aerobatic performance by a P-47 Thunderbolt, P-51 Mustang, Spitfire Mk. V, and HA-1112 Buchon (ME-109), and finally a rather unusual "Classic Formation Team" consisting of a DC-3 and several C-45 transports

43:50 - The Flying Bulls put on stunning displays with their P-51 Mustang, P-38 Lightning, T-28 Trojan, and B-25 Mitchell at the Antidotum Airshow, culminating in a beautiful sunset display

49:08 - "Mitchell Madness" takes over Thunder Over Michigan airshow as 13 B-25 Mitchell bombers fly together in the largest airshow gathering of the type in many years

53:53 - We close out the program with a look at Supermarine Spitfires, including an ex-Soviet airframe fresh out of restoration, the recently repaired Spitfire PR.XIX at Air Legend Paris, and Dunkirk-veteran Spitfire Mk.1a

59:00 - Highlights from Part 1 - Military Airshow Action
