ROKAF Black Eagles 2021

Post by n33d4sp33d_85 » Wed Oct 07, 2020 2:34 pm

Some optimistic news for the 2021 Airshow season!

The world-famous South Korean aerobatic team the "Black Eagles" flying eight KAI T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic advanced trainers and light combat aircraft is considering a short European tour in July 2021! While not many details are known yet both the Royal International Air Tattoo and the MAKS-2021 International Aviation and Space Salon have already sent invitation letters to the Chief of Air Staff of the Republic of Korea Air Force and recently the General Director of Aviasalon JSC, Alexander Levin met with the ROKAF Attaché Colonel Kim Yong Wook to discuss the conditions for the participation of the team.

The Black Eagles are part of the 8th Fighter Wing of the Republic of Korea Air Force and are based at Wonju AB, in Gangwon province. Their last European visit in 2012 saw the team perform at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in 2012 where they won the King Hussein Memorial Sword, for the " 'Best Overall Flying Demonstration' and the 'As The Crow Flies Trophy'. They also displayed at the RAF Waddington International Air Show where they were awarded the Boeing Trophy for the best display.

While we can't predict the future and how the COVID situation will look next year we can only hope with our fingers and toes crossed that the team will make it to at least one of those events!

Such a tour is not practically possible. There's only one day seperating the end of RIAT from the start of MAKS. MAKS is preceded by several days of practices and media events. The two shows are at least a day of travelling apart, but I'm certain the Black Eagles would want to leave longer, in case of bad weather. Practically speaking, the team would probably plan to be in-situ at MAKS before RIAT has even started - and this is before we consider that the team have never conducted a multi-nation tour before, or that it'll be a nightmare to plan given coronavirus uncertainty.

Singling out RIAT seems either like a stab in the dark made without checking the dates, or an attempt to get more likes or shares on the post. The ROK get invited to RIAT every year, so it's business as usual there - it'd be more newsworthy if they hadn't been invited. A trip to MAKS alone seems much more realistic (or, perhaps, a multi-show tour that doesn't include RIAT).

There have been rumblings about the Black Eagles visiting MAKS for a few weeks now, and discussions are presumably at a fairly advanced stage given how much noise the airshow organisers have been making on social media. Here's the official press release from late last month:
