RAF Red Arrows 2022

Post by Adam » Tue Nov 09, 2021 3:25 pm

It was good to get some details at today's post-season symposium from the RAF Air Events Team on the upcoming 2022 display season. They confirmed that the Red Arrows will be available from June to September, with the possibility of a small overseas tour at the end of the season, which should not affect their UK display season. Beyond their usual airshows, priorities for thr RAF during the 2022 display season will include:
  • Supporting the "levelling up" and "build back better" policies, which the Events Team said would be "good news for the devolved nations"
  • Diamond Jubilee events, including Trooping the Colour on the 2nd June and other events which are still TBC
  • The Commonwealth Games, due to be held in Birmingham on the 28th July-8th August
However, the RAF Events Team are aware that the government has made a habit of using the Red Arrows at short notice for political purposes; they said that all stakeholders, including the government, have been made aware that this short-term availability will simply not be possible in busier years.

The Air Events Team also gave details of other RAF, JHC and RN assets which will be available next year. A total of 105 UK events and 32 overseas events have requested UK military participation for the 2022 season, and they said almost all should get UK military participation of some description. As well as the Red Arrows, assets will include:
  • The BBMF, including the Lancaster, should be available all season
  • The Typhoon solo display will be available on a maximum of 12 weekends
  • The Tutor solo display is dependent on the current backlog of student pilots being resolved before the start of the display season
  • The RAF Falcons will be available all season and are being actively pushed to airshow organisers, having only been requested by two airshows in 2021
  • The F-35B will not be an official display asset due to lack of airframes and high cost, but will have "very limited" flypast/role demonstration availability
  • The P-8A will have "very limited" flypast potential
  • The RAF transport fleet will be "operationally focussed" but the Events Team will make every effort to get the C-130 to a few shows before retirement
  • The Chinook HC.6 solo display is TBC depending on operational commitments
  • The Attack Helicopter Display Team is TBC depending on operational commitments
  • The Black Cats will provide a full season of solo displays
  • The Puma, Merlin and Wildcat will have limited static display availability

I feel a little doubtful that they would come to the US again (on the other hand they have also been to the Middle East and Asia semi-recently as well) but this timing would be very good for some major USAF 75th anni shows at Edwards and Nellis

Interesting thought, but I can't see it. A tour that lasts until mid-November would be quite unusual, and would impact winter training. I can't remember the exact wording, but the Events Team said that next year's tour would be smaller than previous years. I'm guessing that means finishing their UK season in mid-September and then doing a couple of European shows and maybe a display or two in the Middle East and being home by mid-October - which is basically what they did this year. Back-to-back Middle East tours would not be unusual for the Reds, they toured the region in both 2016 and 2017, for example.

Given the sheer size and length of the 2019 North America tour and its impact on airshows here in Britain, I think the RAF will feel they've done their bit for US airshows and can forget about them for a decade.

Yeah, I'd thought it was odd how few airshows they've attended, especially as they had an entirely new (and very entertaining) show this year. Worth noting that the Falcons get booked for lots of non-airshow events. The Events Team believe this is because the long and uncertain duration of their display slot makes it difficult to fit them in to a busy flying display programme - so they've decided to axe the pre-jump "dummy runs" to speed up the whole jump process and make the team easier to integrate into a normal airshow.

I was hoping the Typhoon Demo could plz swing out to the US West... be nice if they could kindly do Abbotsford, BC, Canada or Nellis/USAF 75th.

If the Red Arrows came back, that'd be rad too!

Incredibly unlikely in any year, let alone in 2022. The Typhoon solo display is a part time display team and they have only been given 12 weekends of availability between June and September, so Nellis falls outside that window and Abbotsford (even assuming they were given the extra availability to take a week out of operations for the transit flights) would just be a weird and horrendously expensive way to waste one of their precious 12 weekends when they are the only representive of RAF front-line jets on the British airshow circuit and there are several nations considering buying the Typhoon who want to see it too. As for the Red Arrows, see my earlier post... I'd love to see them at Nellis and as far as I know it's not impossible, but I don't think it's particularly likely either, and Abbotsford is off the table because we've already been told their tour is after the end of their UK season.

It's difficult to overstate just how huge the impact of the Red Arrows' 2019 American Tour was on the UK airshow circuit - basically half an airshow season where not a single UK airshow had a headline act (at least, not that a non-enthusiast audience particularly cared about. Some had the Typhoon and/or Breitling Jet Team but it's just not the same). Imagine sending the Snowbirds abroad for three months mid-summer and how detrimental that would be for shows in Canada.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's five years, ten years or longer until the next time an RAF aircraft performs at a North American airshow.

Quite apart from their seemingly-imminent schedule release, it's getting to that time of year when the Reds' display routine for the season is becoming clearer.

2021 manoeuvres that continuine to be practiced this year:
  • Tornado
  • Goose
  • Gypo Break
  • Gypo Pass
  • Wall Arrival
  • Rollbacks
  • Heart & Rolling Heart
  • Python
  • Slalom (maybe only the flat show to replace Python?)
  • Countless Synchro opposition passes that I don't have time to try and unpick
Old manoeuvres from previous seasons being practiced this year:
  • Vertical Break (last included 2019)
  • Corkscrew (last included 2019)
  • Phoenix Bend (last included 2019)
2021 manoeuvres that seemingly aren't being practiced this year:
  • Mirror Roll & Mirror Flat
Also have seen a clip of some kind of bomb burst that looks like a modified Detonator or a 9-aircraft version of the Vixen Break in the making - but hard to be certain when they haven't yet put the whole team up at once.
