Meet the Blue Angels' commanding officer and flight leader for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
The U.S. Navy Blue Angels have announced their Commanding Officer for the 2023 and 2024 air show seasons, Commander Alexander P. Armatas.

Commander Alexander Armatas is a native of Skaneateles, New York, and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering. Commander Armatas earned his wings at Naval Air Station Meridian in June 2005.

Currently, Commander Armatas serves as the Commanding Officer of VFA-105, nicknamed the “Gunslingers.” He joined VFA-105 in May of 2019, serving as Executive Officer prior to taking command in January 2021.

From December 2016 to July 2018, Commander Armatas served as the Strike Fighter Placement Officer for the Navy Personnel Command in Millington, Tennessee, and was responsible for Officer manpower for all east coast and Japan-based Strike Fighter Squadrons, including the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.

Commander Alexander Armatas will take command of the Blue Angels following the conclusion of the 2022 air show season, relieving Captain Brian C. Kesselring, who took command of the team in September of 2019.

For the first time in its 76-year history, the Navy’s Blue Angels will have a woman flying as part of its core six-ship jet demonstration team.
