The crickets are deafening.

This article has a likely explanation:

https://theaviationist.com/2020/03/19/h ... rs-canyon/
"Some photographers in the area have grown increasingly protective of information about aircraft in Star Wars Canyon or Rainbow Canyon, citing growth in the number of photographers and tourists to the area as a concern. Social media groups dedicated to photography of aircraft in the canyon were made private and anyone suspected of reporting on flight activity were removed from the groups, including this reporter...."

Good point. I guess those people will keep quiet - until they want everyone to see *their* pictures then suddenly publicity will be fine. Oh well.

I am with you on that, it is akin to some of the stories, legend or otherwise, about some of British low level spotter community and the lengths taken to limit exposure or even participation.

All very hush hush and protective until such time as one gets 'that' shot.

More info will leak as tourists notice or those with an interest in publicity (panamint springs restaraunt etc) post more.

This is more or less academic in the current COVID crisis but here is an update from the Scramble Facebook page:

"Following our Scramble Facebook News (SFN) report of 11 March 2020*, we now can present a picture of one of the first transitions of Super Hornets through the low-fly area of Death Valley (CA) on that day.

Although they are not a razor-sharp pictures, great thanks to our contributor Jeroen Manders confirming that the area is open again.

Scramble is informed that passes are still very limited and local police and park rangers are having a watchful eye on people standing on the famous ridges. They also discourage the use of the locations."

Funny you should post that, the last couple of days I have been having some good chats about the Sidewinder and other spots to hit. North of Kernville seems to be a good place in general with many hilltops to pick from. And there is a hill towards the east side of Panamint Valley that should be decent. I'm not planning any trips but I'm glad to keep them in the back of my mind for the next time I'm out there.

It has been a while, but the latest revision of the Sidewinder route had been going around and it clearly states to avoid overflight of Rainbow Canyon and the Father Crowley Overlook. This is apparently (according to a military pilot from the area) by request of the Parks Service after the civilians were injured in the crash. The routing now mentions an alternative West to East crossing several miles north of the overlook.
