On this day in 1945:
The last Boeing-built B-17 was delivered #OTD in 1945. Boeing production shifted to focus on the B-29, though Vega and Douglas continued building Flying Fortresses under license until summer. Did you know of the five remaining B-17s that regularly fly, none are actually Boeing-built? There is one Boeing-built bird that is restored to airworthy standards, but it's unlikely she will ever fly. Do you know which it is?

On this day in 1961; yesterday to be more precise:
Sixty years ago Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space. Gagarin lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome atop a variation of a rocket originally designed to launch nuclear weapons to become the first person to orbit the Earth.

On this date in 1943 the first Boeing B-29 rolled out of the Wichita assembly plant. Naturally this makes us want to watch a couple of B-29s flying together...
On this date in 1943 the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt went up against the Luftwaffe for the first time. Flashback!

On this date in 1948, newspapers all over the world published pictures of B-47 Stratojets taking off using rocket-assisted takeoff (RATO) for the first time.
