On this date in 1991 seven 596th Bomb Squadron (2nd Bomb Wing) B-52Gs departed Barksdale AFB for a 35 hour and 24 minute long, 14,000 mile non-stop mission to bomb targets in Iraq dubbed Operation Secret Surprise (AKA Operation Secret Squirrel). The mission set a new world record for longest bombing mission and was the first time a GPS guided missile had been used in combat.

On this date in 1910 the US Navy's highest-scoring ace, David McCampbell, was born in Bessemer AL. McCampbell scored 34 aerial victories, commanded the Fabled Fifteen air group aboard the carrier Essex, was a Medal of Honor recipient, and rose to the rank of Captain before retiring after 31 years in the Navy.
