On this date in 1961 Major Deutschendorf and his crew, Defensive Systems Officer Captain Raymond R. Wagener and Radar Navigator/Bombardier Captain William L. Polhemus, set a new 2000 kilometer closed-circuit speed record of 1061.8 miles per hour while flying a Convair B-58 Hustler.

It was #OTD that the Vought-Sikorsky VS-316A made its first flight at Stratford, Connecticut. The VS-316A, designated XR-4 by the US Army, established the single main rotor/anti-torque tail rotor configuration that would be the standard in helicopter design for decades to come.
