On this date in 1963, Major Leroy Gordon "Gordo" Cooper Jr. lifted off atop Mercury/Atlas 9 from pad 14 at Cape Canaveral to fly Faith 7 around the globe 22 times. Cooper was the last American astronaut launched alone into space.
