On this date in 1963 pilot/astronaut Leroy Gordon "Gordo" Cooper lifted off atop an Atlas booster in Faith 7 to begin the final manned space mission of the Mercury program Gordo completed 22 Earth orbits before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.
