On this date in 1963 pilot/astronaut Leroy Gordon "Gordo" Cooper lifted off atop an Atlas booster in Faith 7 to begin the final manned space mission of the Mercury program Gordo completed 22 Earth orbits before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.

On this date in 2011 the Space Shuttle Endeavour lifted off on STS-134. Endeavour didn't return to space but the Shuttle got quite a piggyback ride.
