Starfighter returns to the skies!

Starfighters Aerospace announced with pride that their Lockheed TF-104G, registration N991SF (construction number 5209) has flown again.

After months of preparations, it made its first flight from their homebase, Kennedy Space Centre (FL) on 27 January 2021.

N991SF is a former Aeronautica Militare (AMI, Italian Air Force) machine, which in those days carried serial MM54258. The two-seater Starfighter received a new black paint scheme and large “KANON” titles on the vertical stabilizer. These titles refer to a Loading Equipment firm with the same name, one of the sponsors of Starfighters Aerospace.

According to Starfighters Aerospace the jet will join the other two-seater for test pilot training and also civilian pilot training for whoever wishes to fly it! These aircraft are also available for various research activities and adversary air training support.

F-117A heading for Nebraska!

An F-117A Nighthawk is set to arrive at the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum in Ashland (NE) during spring 2021.

The F-117 is one of 64 built for the US Air Force, and reportedly one of only four of the Nighthawks donated to private museums.

The Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate, already has a U-2C Dragon Lady (serial 56-6701) and a SR-71A Blackbird (61-7964) in its collection, so this new black arrival fits very well in the collection.

The Air Force retired the F-117 Nighthawks in 2008, but many words were already published in Scramble and the international aviation press about its secretive re-introduction.

The F-117A for Ashland will not be flown to the Nebraska. It will be brought in from its storage location Tonopah (NV) on the back of a deep loading trailer in early March. It will initially spend time in the museum’s restoration bay before being put on display likely sometime in 2022.

Currently Scramble has knowledge of the following preserved Nighthawks, most are preserved at Air Force Bases. We are looking forward to the four serials for the private museums, of which 82-0803 is one and possibly 79-10781 is the second.

unidentied, YF-117D, Wright Patterson (OH), type designation unconfirmed
79-10780/TR, YF-117A, Nellis AFB (OH), as "780"
79-10781/ED, YF-117A, Wright Patterson (OH)
79-10782/ED, YF-117A, Holloman AFB (NM), as "85-816"
79-10783/ED, YF-117A, Edwards AFB (CA), formerly preserved at Palmdale (CA)
82-0803/HO, F-117A, Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum (CA)

Great War Flying Museum – Hangar Expansion Completed!

In late 2020, the Great War Flying Museum, based out of Brampton-Caledon Airport just northwest of Toronto in Ontario, Canada, completed an important expansion of their hangar which houses a significant fleet of full-sized replica WWI-era military flying machines. The presently airworthy aircraft include a Fokker Dr.I Triplane, Fokker D.VII, Sopwith 1½ Strutter, Nieuport 28 plus an 80% scale Royal Aircraft Factory SE-5a. Two additional aircraft are under active rebuild/construction as well.

Canadian Mosquito for sale

De Havilland Mosquito B35 VR796 (C-FHMJ) is offered for sale by its owner Robert Jens of Richmond (BC), Canada. This bomber version of the famous “Mossie” was fully restored in the years 2000 to 2014, making its first flight on 16 June 2014.

It seems to have made its last flight in 2015. This is not unlikely as it is offered with 20 hours TTSO (Total Time Since Overhaul). C-FHMJ is one of the less than 50 survivors of the type of which 7781 were built.

VR796 was built by the British Airspeed factories. It spent eight years in storage at RAF Silloth, before being sold to Canada in 1954.

Registered as CF-HML it was used for aerial cartography by Spartan Air Services Ltd, Ottawa (ONT) from November 1954 to 1963.

After three years of open storage, the aircraft was bought by Don Campbell, who had plans for its rebuild. But these plans failed and Ed Zalesky acquired the project only to store it from 1986 to 2000. By that time Robert Jens got interested and decided to go for a full restoration to airworthy status.
