Over the past couple of years, we have been following the restoration of Supermarine Spitfire F Mk.IX MH603 at Vintage Fighter Restorations (VFR) in Scone, New South Wales, Australia. The aircraft is very close to flying again, and recently made another series of engine runs.

In recent years Historic Helicopters brought back a number of historic helicopter types like Whirlwind, Wessex and Sea King to flying condition.

The group led by Andrew Whitehouse has now been able to tackle the restoration of yet another helicopter, a Westland Lynx AH Mk7, G-LNKX. The 1980 built machine, was flown by the British Royal Army as XZ616 (c/n 167) until it was withdrawn from military service.

Historic Helicopters received a temporary permit from the Civil Aviation Authority on 18 November. It is meant for ‘Flight testing for the issue of a Permit to Fly, including associated ferry journeys if applicable’. With this temporary permit in hand, a first successful flight was made one day later already, on 19 November.

It is not the only Lynx that may be flown in the United Kingdom, as another machine (former XZ678 with c/n 244) was taken up in the civilian register on 10 November 2021. This Lynx, believed to be stored at Sproughton, was registered as G-NCKY to Graham Paul Hinkley of Bury St. Edmunds.

Australian restorer Precision Airmotive of Wangaratta (VIC) announced that their latest project, a Curtiss P-40E 41-25123, performed its first successful taxi trials on 30 November.

The fighter was delivered to the RAAF in April 1942 as A29-90, nicknamed ‘Ming the Merciless’. It was flown by their 76th Squadron with code ‘H’ until the end of WW II. Precision Airmotive initially intended to have ‘Ming’ ready for the 100th Anniversary of the RAAF on 31 March 2021, but did not manage to finish the aircraft in time.

At this moment, as far as we know, the fighter is not yet officially registered in the Australian civilian register

Here is the report from Chuck Cravens concerning the restoration of the Dakota Territory Air Museum’s P-47D. Work on the control surfaces continues; the turbosupercharger system ducting is also progressing nicely. The team has also reached two exciting milestones in October, fitting the landing gear to the wings and an R-2800 to the engine mount for firewall forward mock up work.
