The Air Force Museum of New Zealand‘s Trust Board signed an agreement with the NZ Warbirds Association Inc. at Ardmore, for the loan of ex-RAF English Electric Canberra B(I)8 WT346. Part of this agreement involves this aircraft’s sympathetic restoration to static display condition; once restored, ownership should officially transfer to NZ Warbirds.

Two-seat Warhawk for Biggin Hill

The Collings Foundation of Stow (MA), USA has announced the sale of its Curtis TP-40N Warhawk N293FR. The news was revealed by European Airshows.

The full dual control/dual-cockpit version of the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk fighter is being prepared to be shipped to the United Kingdom. It has been bought by the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar, and will join the three T.IX Spitfire trainers and the world’s only two-seat Hurricane.

The aircraft is due to arrive in the UK in the coming weeks. Depending on its certification the BBHH/Flyaspitfire.com plans to offer flights in this unique machine towards the end of the 2021 season.

The aircraft concerned is based on P-40K Warhawk 42-9749 a project that was recovered from the Aleutians and rebuilt for Evergreen. Inspired by the Collings Foundation the project was rebuilt by Aerofab into a “factory-built” TP-40N. This aircraft received the identity of a P-40N, 42-104721, the wreckage of which was recovered from Papua New Guinea. This Warhawk was flown by the RAAF as A29-499 during WW II.

Another Tiger Moth for the Netherlands

According to our own Scramble intelligence, the country will soon see the arrival of De Havilland DH82ATiger Moth D-EPKS (82981).

This vintage biplane has been bought by a group of Dutch owners, and is expected to arrive at Seppe-Breda Airport by Mid-April.

The Tiger was flown by the Royal Air Force as R5086 until 25 October 1957, when it received the civilian registration G-APIH.

In February 1958 the aircraft was exported to Germany as D-EMEX, and later sold to Denmark as OY-DGJ.

From there the Tiger crossed the Atlantic and became N111DH. It is unknown if it has actually flown in the US. Registration N111DH was cancelled in April 1980 and the aircraft returned to its country of origin.

There the aircraft was restored and it once again became G-APIH, receiving a new CoA in August 1994. By that time it was already owned by Klaus Stewering, of Borken-Gemen, Germany.

Two ladies living in the same town, Britte Langenberg and Claudia Heitkamp, bought “India Hotel” in December 2018. They had it reregistered as D-EPKS in March 2019 but obviously took the decision to sell it.

Fortunately there is always room for another Tiger at Seppe-Breda airport!

To speed up the process, Military Aviation Museum has decided to split the restoration between two well-established workshops, with Bu.36175’s fuselage going to Pioneer Aero Ltd at Ardmore Airport outside Auckland, New Zealand, and the wings going to AeroTrader in Chino, California.

Another great update about the Avro Lancaster B.VII NX611 Just Jane which is under restoration to airworthy condition with the Lincoln Aviation Heritage Center at former RAF East Kirkby in Lincolnshire, England.

Periodically, we like to catch up on restoration updates from the workshops at the world-class New England Air Museum (NEAM) in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. Following on from the completion of their remarkable Burnelli CBY-3 blended-wing cargo plane (which we will cover in another article) we have received the following report from restoration crew member, Carl Cruff, concerning the museum’s rare, original Douglas DC-3/C-49.
