Join us in wishing Apollo and Gemini Astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin a very happy 92nd birthday today!
You may have known that Aldrin was a US Air Force pilot, but did you know that he flew F-86s during the Korean War and shot down two MiGs during the conflict? Yet, in his early flight training days, he learned on a T-6 Texan just like ours!
Aldrin is a graduate of West Point (3rd in his class), has a doctorate from MIT, and even served as commandant of the Air Force's Test Pilot School. But of course, he is most famous for piloting the Apollo 11 lunar module... do you remember its name?
On this date in 1971 the McDonnell Douglas Photo Phantom (in this case the RF-4E) entered service with the Luftwaffe. These USAF Photo Phantoms put on quite a show!
On this date in 1951 Lieutenant Colonel William E. Bertram shot down a MiG-15, thereby scoring the first aerial victory for the Republic F-84E Thunderjet in Korea.
On this date in 1976 the Concorde was introduced.
On this date in 1970 Boeing's 747 entered service with Pan American and TWA.
On this date in 1971 the Orion started its all-out assault on the record books!
