On this date in 1945 XXI Bomber Command B-29s were escorted to Tokyo and back by Iwo Jima-based VII Fighter Command P-51 Mustangs for the first time.
On this date in 1945 386 Task Force 58 aircraft sank the Japanese battleship Yamato and five escorting ships in the East China Sea. By this time the Helldiver's kinks had (mostly) been worked out.
