Every year, I consider going to this and have never done it. The logistics of getting over to Louisville and then driving back afterwards have scared me off, and I don't really want to turn this into an overnight trip. I've committed to enough of those this year. Maybe I'll try watching from the Indiana side. Thinking of trying Ashland Park and skipping out before the fireworks. We'll see what the final lineup and weather look like.

From what I've been able to observe from the KY side, the Indiana folks should have roughly a similar viewing experience. This especially seems to be the case in terms of the demonstrations. In fact, a LOT of last year's F-35A demonstration seemed to fall over into the Indiana side a lot. I would not let being on the Indiana side stop me from going in the least.

Yes, it's free. They fly over the Ohio River downtown. You can watch from either the Kentucky or Indiana side, though they perform to the KY side. The line-up is mainly current military with some warbirds/acrobatics mixed in. Flying starts around 3pm and goes until dusk. There might be a couple night time acts, like this year with Matt Younkin. Unless it's a demo aircraft most planes make two or three passes, with a few only making one pass. Because it's over water the fighter demos are allowed to use flares and the helo demos are right off the water kicking up spray. For photography the sun is more of an issue on the Indiana side.

After the airshow is over they have a massive fireworks display. This is what most of the crowd is there to see. We leave right after the flying is over to beat the 700-800 thousand sized crowd. To get a parking spot relatively close and good spot to see the show we get there no later than noon. Locals will get there at like 8am but we're driving in from out of state so that's not possible for us. On the Indiana side you can find free street parking but it maybe a mile or two away. On the Louisville side your gonna have to pay to park and it can be very expensive the closer you get to the river. The weather can vary drastically. My first year it was in the 70s and sunny. Last year it was low 40s with a cold bitter wind coming off the river.
Thank you Bruce for all the information. I am also traveling from out of state so for me it probably means going down the night before and getting a hotel room somewhere near louisville.

Curious if anyone has ever shot from the top deck of the witherspoon parking garage. Its a little farther from the river edge but it get you some added elevation. Additionally if you do shoot from the Indiana side is a 100-500mm lens on full frame a long enough lens to get good shots?

Not sure how accurate that list actually is. Air boss told me they have no F-35s even confirmed and that list the Wisconsin F-35s and the F-35C demo team.
