AX53 Recording Issue

Post by awal2049 » Tue Apr 23, 2024 10:09 pm

Hello all,

Recently, I used the AX53 at the Charleston Air Show for the first time. I love the camera, but for some reason, the videos I got have this weird aliasing/artifact problem when I edit them (please forgive me if I'm using the wrong terminology to describe this). When I play back, they look fine, but for some reason editing them creates bars across the screen. I shot in AVCHD mode with a data speed of 100 MB/s (I think the fastest possible). Please see the two videos below. F-35 TEST2 is the raw video from my camera. It looks fine. F-35 TEst is the video edited and converted via my editor. You may have to change the resolution or pause to notice the problem.

Based on this, I have two questions:

1) What setting or feature is causing this, and what can I change so that this doesn't happen again? I'll provide any more settings I used if they're relevant.

2) Is there anything I can do to salvage this footage? It's not super precious to me as I was using this show as a trail run anyway, but still would be nice to upload in a better state.

Appreciate any responses I can get. I'd like to get this fixed prior to the Cherry Point Air Show since there is a lot of stuff there that I want to capture in the best quality possible.

Thanks again in advance for the help.

It looks like the file you rendered is interlaced? Seems like it's probably just your export settings being out of line since the raw footage looks fine.

What frame rate did you record in? Even the raw footage looks choppy but my eyes are used to 60fps. Youtube seems to indicate it is 25fps which is cinematic but you may want to consider 30fps for slightly smoother video. We prefer 60fps which is why we still shoot in 1080p. Doing so also gives better IS and some extra zoom.

Recorded in 50i (the only options in the menu were 50i, 50p, and 25p; 60 isn’t available). So I guess 50p is the way to go.

Interesting that you have PAL options on a US camera. Where did you buy it from? Sounds like you got a European model. 50i would be the culprit, but 50p is a very solid option at 4k.

I guess that explains why the support manual is in 12 languages but not English. I guess I can live with it. I got it via a bundle on Amazon, distributer is Electronics Basket

Sony FDR-AX53 4K Ultra HD... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BYKNFQ5P

As has been pointed out, your edited video is interlaced, which places even number lines in one frame and odd number lines in the next, and any movement in the meantime obviously comes out at a different spot on the screen.

The main issue you may end up with on that bundle is that you may not have a warranty. Manufacturers will not cover "gray market" imports, and may not even accept them for out-of-warranty service. All I see about coverage on that Amazon page is Amazon's own coverage.
