Highlights from a very pleasant Midlands Air Festival.



An event charactarised initially by a poor weather forecast and a large number of unfortunate last-minute cancellations, leading to a grey and rather drawn-out, gappy flying display on the Friday afternoon. But the organisers did a superb job finding some very high-quality last minute replacements, and when the sun finally came out on Sunday, it shone down on a really very enjoyable and varied show indeed.

A couple of things that proved particularly memorable: the Saab Draken's Sunday display was tremendous given the restrictions imposed upon it (and that final pass was quite something), and the DC-6 was a stunner on both days. A hat tip, too, to the Red Arrows, who presented what was generally agreed to be the tidiest and most interesting display for several years. The Gnat display was a cool 3 minutes long (fuel constraints) but what a treat to see one flying at a British airshow again after five long years. Plus, there were a few airshow firsts: Team Mono performed as a mixed-type Mono/Skybolt duo for the first time, and Paul Freeland presented his first ever fully-aerobatic F260 display.
