WATCH: This Rare Super Hornet/Corsair Formation Showcases Decades Of Naval Aviation History

Visitors to the Cleveland National Airshow this past Labor Day weekend were treated to a special sight – a US Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet and World War II-era F4U Corsair flying together! The pair performed several formation flybys before landing, then taxied together at show center and folded their wings to show their common bond as carrier-based fighters. Check out the entire performance in our video above!

This sort of sight used to be fairly commonplace through the US Navy Tailhook Legacy Flight program, which is similar to the US Air Force’s Heritage Flight program. Unfortunately the budget cuts of recent years stopped not only the Legacy Flights, but also the Hornet demonstrations themselves. As the TACDEMO teams return to full prominence on the airshow circuit, there is hope that these formations can again be flown regularly.

Don’t forget to also watch our video of the full Super Hornet aerobatic demonstration from Cleveland!

WATCH: Legendary Warbirds Strafe, Bomb, And Wow – With Pyro!

Warbird Extravaganza!

The Texas Flying Legends Museum in Houston, TX owns an impressive collection of WWII-era warbirds, and they put on an amazing display last year at AirVenture! With aircraft ranging from P-51 Mustangs to a British Spitfire to the B-25 Mitchell, this video has some serious warbird punch, including some excellent pyro. Check out this video where you get to see legends like the Mitchell, Mustang, Spitfire, Corsair, Wildcat, and Warhawk perform pass after pass. Strafing, bombing, diving, and climbing as they put on a show for the ages.

You’ll get to see a rare formation of the aircraft flying overhead. You’ll hear the beautiful sound of the Merlin engines of the Mustang along with the deep and throaty roar of the Mitchell as it passes before you with the bomb bay doors open. You’ll get the full effect of the machine gun chatter as the fighters pass by, and you can almost feel the heat from the explosions as they burst below these beautiful aircraft. So if you enjoy warbirds, and who doesn’t really, then turn up the volume and enjoy this awesome video!

B-25 Mitchell, F4U Corsair, P-51 Mustang Formation - Arsenal of Democracy Flyover in Washington DC

Hopefully by now you are aware of the Arsenal of Democracy flyover scheduled for Friday, May 8th. This massive undertaking will see scores of WWII aircraft, ranging from a Piper Cub to a B-29 Superfortress, parading over Washington DC to celebrate WWII veterans on the 70th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day. The aircraft have been assembling in Culpeper and Manassas, VA in recent days and weeks from all over the country. Each is participating on a volunteer basis. The crews are making the most of their visit, with many practices and media flights taking place in the last few days.

The flyover will begin at 12:10 Eastern time and last for approximately 40 minutes. Fifteen formations have been arranged to reflect major events of the war in chronological order. The aircraft will fly West to East over Independence Ave at the southern edge of the National Mall, using the Potomac River as their route into and out of the area. Narration and commentary will be provided at the WWII memorial on the Mall by famed airshow announcer Rob Reider. After the Friday flyover, some of the aircraft will fly into nearby Dulles International Airport for a one day exhibition at the National Air and Space Museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center.

Luckily those of us who cannot make it to DC will be able to witness this historic event from anywhere, as a live stream will be available online at http://events.dacast.com/?webcast_id=9 as well as on CSPAN (check your local listings). Be sure to tune in, and then check back here as we will have some on board video from at least one of the formations!
