Thunder In The Valley Airshow To Cease Operations Following 2018 Airshow

Thunder in the Valley Airshow Ceases Operations

The Thunder in the Valley airshow, held annually in Columbus, GA will not be returning in 2019.

The Board of Directors of the event announced that due to raising costs and a difficulty in obtaining sponsorship money, the event would not continue.

“We feel the air show competes with many other events for the same patrons’ time and money, as well as corporate sponsorship dollars. We’ve had great success for 21 years, and we believe the time is right to bring the show to an end,” Phaedra Childers, the event coordinator said.

The air show, which began in 1997 as a local fly-in, had grown to be one of the largest outdoor family events in the Chattahoochee Valley. An average of 10,000 guests per day attended the show each year. Over the show’s 21 year history, more than $1 million in donations have been donated back to Chattahoochee Valley youth organizations and charities from the profits the show collects.

The 2018 edition of the show was held in April and included performances by the Aeroshell Aerobatic Team, Viper Airshows, Kent Pietsch and others.

Wings Over Atlanta 2018 Airshow At Dobbins ARB Canceled

Wings Over Atlanta Air and Space Expo Logo

The planned 2018 Wings Over Atlanta Air and Space Expo has been canceled. The announcement was posted on the base’s Facebook page earlier today. The airshow was scheduled to be held on March 24th and 25th at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Georgia, with the US Air Force Thunderbirds as the headlining performance.

As with most cancellations, money is cited as the main cause. Organizers say that due to “fiscal constraints”, they cannot provide a world-class show and they have decided to postpone the event to a future airshow season.

This now leaves the Thunderbirds with a free weekend in March, which they may leave open or fill with another performance elsewhere. We’ll update their 2018 schedule in our forums with whatever changes come!

Here is the full text of the Facebook post announcing the news:

CANCELED: The 2018 Wings Over Atlanta Air and Space Expo, scheduled for March 24-25 at Dobbins Air Reserve Base, has been canceled.

Due to fiscal constraints, we are unable to provide the community with a world-class air and space expo at this time. It was in the best interest of our community, event partners and Reserve Citizen Airmen to postpone this year’s event to a future airshow season.

“We truly regret to cancel the Wings Over Atlanta Air & Space Expo planned for this March,” said Brig. Gen Richard Kemble, 94th Airlift Wing commander. “The steadfast support we receive from our community is one of our greatest assets and we look forward to the opportunity to bring a premier airshow back to Dobbins in the coming years.”

Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Airshow Canceled For 2016; Snowbirds To Perform At New Show In Georgia Instead

Daytona Beach Airshow - Canadian Forces Snowbirds

Citing sponsorship issues, the 2016 edition of the Wings And Waves Air Show in Daytona Beach, scheduled for October 8-9, has been canceled. In an interview with the Daytona Beach News Journal, Bill Hampton, senior VP for external relations and chief marketing officer for ERAU said “We just simply didn’t fill (the airshow) with the right number of sponsorships this year.” The school’s “business model” changed in 2016, causing them to need more sponsors.

The show was scheduled to have the USAF Thunderbirds and Canadian Forces Snowbirds. Embry-Riddle is celebrating their 90th year in 2016.

But Daytona Beach’s loss is another locations gain…

Wings Over The Golden Isles Airshow

On Wednesday, Brunswick, GA was announced to have picked up the Canadian Forces Snowbirds for a show on the same weekend, the first show in Brunswick since 1997. Buck Roetman, Kent Pietsch, Rob Holland, and Patty Wagstaff will also perform. The DAV Flight Team is scheduled to bring their B-25 “Panchito”. The show will be named “Wings Over The Golden Isles Airshow”.

The Thunderbirds have not yet announced a replacement location for the weekend of October 8-9th.

Aerobatic Airshow Part of Boshears Skyfest Cancelled For 2016

Team Aerodynamix

For the past 23 years, aviation enthusiasts and airshow fans alike could look forward to a yearly airshow in Georgia. However, due to an issue in securing an FAA aerobatic waiver, the Boshears Skyfest in Augusta, GA will not hold an aerobatic airshow in 2016.

On Friday, Feb 5th, Augusta Aviation and Skyfest officials said that they will not hold an airshow at Daniel Field Airport. Last year, the show was held in October and featured Gary Ward, Greg Koontz, Vertigo Airshows and Team Aerodynamix. A car show and airplane rides were also at the 2015 edition of Skyfest.

WJBF in an interview with Augusta Aviation Vice President of Business and Development Becky Shealy confirmed the issue in securing the waiver. When asked if “there is any possibility the F.A.A might resign the waiver” in the future, Shealy said “no.”

Shealy said that trees and nearby homes are causing issues in securing the waiver. Other issues include the proximity to the Augusta Municipal Golf Course, parking and how the aerobatic box would be drawn with the trees and homes.

Organizers do plan on attempting to bring back the airshow part of the event in future years but for 2016, they plan to host a car show, motorcycle show and offer airplane rides

Weather Causes Problems for Southeast Airshows

WCYB Street Level

Once again, Mother Nature is causing havoc for airshows. This time, it’s the Moody AFB and Monroe, NC airshows. Sunday’s edition of Wings over South Georgia has already been canceled for Sunday due to the threat of heavy rainfall and low clouds.

A post on the Moody AFB Facebook page Sunday morning says that “due to inclement weather and in the interest of public safety the Moody Air Force Base Open House and airshow has been canceled for Nov. 8, 2015. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.” The USAF Thunderbirds were scheduled to perform their final demonstration of 2015 show season Sunday afternoon in South Georgia at the airshow.

Another airshow further to the north in Monroe,NC is also being plagued by rain today. As of 8am, no information has been provided on any schedule changes for the Monroe airshow. To the best of our knowledge, events are scheduled as planned.

Yesterday, the schedule for the final day of the NAS Pensacola Blue Angels Homecoming Airshow was adjusted to let the acts perform before rain approached. The Blue Angels took off at 11:30am, an unusual time for the Blues to fly.

Meteorologist and Airshowstuff Photographer Ricky Matthews says that an area of low pressure forming in the Gulf of Mexico will continue to pump moisture up towards both Monroe and Moody AFB through the day. Low clouds and persistent light drizzle will be a threat at Monroe while moderate to at times heavy rain will impact Moody AFB this afternoon.
